The Big Picture: NASA's 3.2-gigapixel global selfie

"Where are you on Earth Right Now?" That's the question NASA posed the public on Earth Day recently. The twist? NASA wanted you to answer, not with words, but with a selfie. 36,422 of you replied with images that were then stitched together to form the mosaic you see above. To fully enjoy the image, there's an interactive 3.2-gigapixel version that lets you get up close and personal with all the submissions (or, if you participated, try to find yourself). 0 Comments Share

Google, Yahoo and others are getting fed up with government gag orders

The EFF may be handing out gold stars to firms that publish their own transparency reports, but earning that recognition isn't easy. Government data requests are often coupled with gag orders, barring firms from telling users that security agencies are thumbing through their data. Now Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Facebook are arguing that these orders are a violation of the First Amendment.

Naturally, the government disagrees, pointing out that the nondisclosure requirements of its security requests have been applied tens of thousands of times without issues. It further argues that "hypothesizing scenarios in which the NSL

Amazon steps up pressure on Hachette for better e-book pricing

For months, Amazon has been applying relatively subtle pressure on Hachette an apparent bid to get better pricing on e-books; unnecessary shipping delays and reduced discounts on paper books have been common. Well, it's not subtle any more. The company has started pulling pre-orders for Hachette titles, either listing them as "unavailable" or removing product pages outright. The dispute leaves many caught in the crossfire -- authors lose revenue, while customers have to track down smaller stores that will take advance purchases.

Neither side is commenting on this latest incident. However, it's a tactic we've seen before. Amazon pulled Macmillan's books in 2010 after the publisher demanded more favorable pricing from the e-retailer, which frequently sells e-books at below-retail prices in order to drive adoption. The company only acquiesced after Apple launched into the e-book business with a pricing model that gave publishers more clout. The arrangement got Apple and partners into trouble for alleged price fixing, but it also kept Amazon from taking advantage of its e-commerce dominance to squeeze publishers; they could easily find better terms elsewhere. Now that those companies are legally prevented from making such deals, Amazon may have returned to using its market lead as a weapon against book giants that fall out of line. 0 Comments Share

Milan building will pioneer smog-eating cement

When the Milan Expo opens next year, the centerpiece building will be a masterpiece of sustainable engineering. Designed around the idea of an urban forest, the new Palazzo Italia will generate its own electricity, and will be clad in materials specifically designed to clean the surrounding air. The designers, Nemesi & Partners, are using photocatalytic cement - basically, concrete that's been mixed with titanium oxide. When the building material comes into contact with ultraviolet light, the titanium oxide reacts with nitrogen dioxide in the air, converting the pollutant to a salt that can easily be washed away. The building will open in time for the Expo's launch next May, and we're already planning to book a trip over so that we can spend a day sniffing the air next to the building.

PlaceAVote wants to replace politicians with internet polls

Congress' approval rating sits as low as 10 percent, depending on which poll you trust. So a bunch of engineers and developers came up with a uniquely Silicon Valley solution -- replace politicians with software. We're not talking about some advanced AI, though, so don't start worrying about Skynet just yet. PlaceAVote is a simply a digital polling platform, which means there will still need to be a human being on the floor casting a vote. The first two candidates who pledge to simply vote whatever way the internet tells them are already on the ballot in California, and 20 more are supposedly on tap for 2016.

If any of those candidates win they'd then have to find a way to get a private key code out to each and every one of their constituents. That key along with a unique identifier, such as social security number would be needed to log into the PlaceAVote system, which makes security one of its biggest priorities. Of course, no system is 100 percent secure and PlaceAVote would certainly face its fair share of challenges from hackers and those looking to commit voter fraud it it enjoys even a modicum of success. The entire premise requires voters have regular access to a computer for this attempt to shoehorn direct democracy into a representative system to work, which will definitely be problematic is poorer districts around the country. And while well intentioned there's a pretty good case against direct democracy in general; just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good (see Modern Family). In many ways having an elected representative is saving us from ourselves.

This map shows you how far you can go in 10 minutes

Commuting is often, no, regularly, hell. And now there's a map to prove it. Enter a city into the Isoscope map, and it will show how far a two, four, six, eight and ten-minute drive will take you, specific to the day of the week -- and to a prescribed hour of awful, awful rush-hour traffic. You can click multiple areas and adjust the hour, increasing or decreasing where you're able to go. If you've only get a 30-minute lunch break, you can try to make that work. "We wanted our project to shed light on situations when urban mobility is compromised, when the pulse of the city falters, such as during traffic jams," developer Sebastian Kaim told Fast Company. There's also a pedestrian option for non-drivers, and after testing a few cities and times, we're thinking next week could well be a work-at-home kind of a week.

Roombots: Lego-like robotic blocks that transform into furniture (video)

Imagine if you can just snap your fingers or issue a verbal command for a table, a chair or any other furniture to assemble right in front of you. That's what a team of researchers from the Swiss Biorobotics Laboratory (BioRob) at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) hopes to achieve by developing Lego-like robotic blocks called Roombots that can stick to each other and form different structures. Each Roombot is made up of two blocks with wireless connection and a battery that powers motors, which the robot uses to rotate into place. These blocks also have retractable claws so anything you conjure up can climb walls and ceilings or stay attached to floors. The researchers believe that Roombots could be very useful to the elderly and people with disabilities, as they could eventually tell the machines to move closer to them or move out of the way.

For now, though, the team still needs to figure out how users can control the robots -- while voice or gesture command would be ideal, the team's looking at using software made for tablets at the moment. They still also need to smooth out the robots' movements, tweak their algorithm and make sure they work together better first before your can fill your homes with reconfigurable furniture.

Then pass Microsoft company on Sony's PlayStation in China

Only for about a month, Microsoft has announced that he will bring the Xbox in China come September, his ban courtesy of the local government lifted rather lax imported video games and consoles. Today, Sony has finally confirmed that the PlayStation console of Redmond in the far East actually will join. As Microsoft with China BesTV cooperation Sony called the cooperation with a local company Shanghai Oriental Pearl culture development (DCP short). SINA tech pointed out, it's interesting that the BesTV and fads are media group part of Shanghai.

Joint venture between Sony and DCP are two companies: one that handle manufacturing and sale of equipment and other services through sale, license, distribution and r & E software handle. Sony China holds 70% of the newly-formed Sony Computer Entertainment (Shanghai) (no doubt, who manages the hardware part), but only 49% of other new business development called Shanghai Oriental Pearl Sony computer entertainment culture.

As you can imagine, the announcement that the joint venture "will introduce" quality, healthy games noted suitable to the national conditions of China and the preferences of the national actors, because according to Government policy. This means that we will probably see that censored much PlayStation games out there (and also less games in General), as well as our hypothesis is that the consoles still not compatible with play, which could be released in other countries. That is, it should not be forgotten that China joint venture Nintendo iQue, never this kind of regional applied on the DS and DS 3-limitation when it is sold.

What is not clear is when and to whom the PlayStation products officially hits stores in China, but formerly as Sony tried, about his long preparation for this launch, we would not be surprised if the Japanese company Microsoft in the race here.

California's new self-driving car regulations prohibit falling asleep at the wheel

California is fine with car makers test-driving autonomous vehicles on its roadways, but the DMV now has some rules on exactly how. Under new regulations, drivers (or riders as the case may be) will need to be official testers on a manufacturer's payroll and go through a special training program to get a yearlong permit. They'll also have to remain attentive behind the wheel -- so no napping on the way to work yet -- and notify the DMV if they're in an accident or have to override the car's manual controls for any reason. When it comes to cars, it's not a free-for-all. Manufacturers will need to apply for a permit for each individual vehicle, and cars are required to have at least five million dollars worth of liability insurance.

Autonomous vehicles aren't exactly new to California. They've been legal in the state since 2012, and Google has already started testing cars in its hometown of Mountain View. The new regulations created by the DMV are designed to put a few boundaries on that testing. While they've already been adopted, applications for the program won't be accepted until July 1st, with the regulations officially going into effect September 14th.

New Segway Patroller gives mall cops a third wheel

When you think of a Segway, usually a self-balancing, slightly dorky two-wheeled contraption comes to mind, right? Well, forget all that. The company has just committed heresy by launching the SE-3 Patroller, a three-wheeled, front-steering model. It's targeted exclusively at law-enforcement officers, meter enforcement types and, ahem, security personnel -- which make up the company's most lucrative market by far. It's highly visible in order to deter crime with headlights, brake lights, sirens, emergency lights and a rather non-functional-looking (but adorable) visor. It also packs rider detection to shut the vehicle off when not occupied and a 4.3-inch data screen. All of that comes in at $12,000 for a vehicle you can't even sit down on -- unlike arch-competitor T3 Motion's model. Still, there's very little chance cops'll tip the thing over, a common Segway blunder that doesn't exactly shock and awe the bad guys.

Report: Google targeting businesses with subsidized WiFi routers

Google is readying a plan to provide heavily subsidized, commercial grade WiFi routers and equipment to businesses, according to The Information. The idea is to give companies like doctor's offices and restaurants easy internet access while letting Google mine the data for targeted ads. Insiders say that would also allow such businesses to set up a website and even learn about customers buying habits. That lines up nicely with other rumors about Mountain View's WiFi plans in Google Fiber cities and public spaces like Starbucks. There's even talk of an app to let you manage your myriad WiFi connections -- so we wouldn't be surprised to see Google's master plan soon.

LG's 'QuickCircle' G3 case opens a window into your phone

LG hasn't officially revealed the G3 yet, but its new QuickCircle case gives you a pretty good idea of what the device can do. The QuickCircle, which the South Korean company just announced, features a circular cutout in front so you can access the UI's lock screen, take pictures, listen to music and even make calls even if you don't open up the case. It has other things going for it other than its tiny window, as well, such as Qi wireless charging standard compatibility and a Smart Lighting feature that emits a soft glow within the cutout whenever you get a call or a message. Next month, LG's also releasing an SDK for the case, and if you're lucky, someone out there has a brilliant idea just waiting to be made.

DARPA flaunts wearable display with Oculus-like head-tracking

DARPA has long sought a heads-up display to give soldiers situational awareness without distracting them, and it looks like technology has finally caught up to that ambition. It recently unveiled a new ULTRA-Vis prototype at its DARPA Demo Days, saying the breakthrough was a "holographic wave guide" display. Similar to how the Oculus Rift headset works (but not in 3D), it'll project color images locked to the terrain -- even if you move your head -- thanks to motion-sensing and GPS systems. For instance, targeting icons will stay fixed on enemy or friendly positions, even tracking targets behind GIs with a 360-degree ring-like display. It'll also allow soldiers to communicate with each other, their base camp or air support, and play drone video in the display. Like similar projects, the prototype is far from battle-ready, but will function as a test-bed for all of DARPA's wild ideas until the final design is complete.

Chrome's 'OK Google' voice search rolls out to all

If you wanted to enjoy hands-free Google searching from your desktop, your only option was to install an extension or become an early tester. The downside was that you'd have to accept some additional bugs might come your way. No more -- Google has rolled out a Chrome update that integrates the company's now iconic "OK Google" command directly into the latest version of its browser and in Chrome OS. As long as you're based in the US or have Chrome set to US English, any time you visit the Google homepage or open a new tab, you can quickly say (or loudly shout, the choice is yours) "OK Google" to perform a search, ask a question or schedule a reminder. As long as you fulfil the geographic requirements (or are happy to tinker with Chrome's language settings), you should be able to test those voice commands seconds after you update.

Samsung gives up on its homegrown Music and Book Hub services

Just like HTC with its doomed movie service, Samsung is apparently starting to realize that its in-house efforts can't compete with specialist alternatives. While Spotify has been busily publicizing its rapid growth, the Korean manufacturer has been quietly warning Galaxy phone and tablet owners about the impending closure of its similar, own-brand Music Hub. Users can no longer sign up for the premium monthly subscription option, and a message inside the app says they'll need to re-download any purchased tracks and use up any vouchers before the entire service shuts down on July 1st. This at least suggests that any stored tracks will continue to work after that date, perhaps via 7Digital, whose platform underpinned the Music Hub in the first place.

The warning message promises to advise customers on how they can continue their "music experience with Samsung," which could well include asking them to switch to its premium Milk radio-style service instead (although this isn't really an equivalent offering). Meanwhile, there's also a short note about changes to Samsung's ebook service: The company say it's closing the Books section of its Hub and merging it into a new "Kindle for Samsung" app that relies solely on Amazon. And that's not the end of it -- pretty soon the whole Hub may evaporate, as a Samsung exec recently tweeted that "Samsung Hub is going away."

Epic's Unreal Engine 4 'Flappy Bird' homage 'Tappy Chicken' now available for free (update: video!)

Epic Games can crow all it wants about how easy its next-gen development toolset is to use, but until we actually see results, those words are pretty hollow. That changes today with the release of Tappy Chicken, the first Unreal Engine 4 game released for Android, HTML5 browsers and iOS. Yeah, it's a far cry from the fiery demon we've come to associate with anything UE4-related (and it looks more than a little bit like another flying fowl), but the key here is that Epic says it's the work of exactly one person using a sort of simplified scripting system called Blueprints. What's more, the developer isn't even a coder -- he's an artist by the name of Shane Caudle. Caudle designed the game-play loop for the procedurally-generated game in an evening and spent around a week on the menus and squashing bugs. Epic says that it could even be ported to consoles pretty easily. The reason for the free game? To show how easy it is to mod and add-on with UE4 even by someone who doesn't know a lick of typical programming languages like C

Vodafone's gift of Netflix takes the edge off its 4G plans

If deciding which mobile operator to go with hinges more on watching House of Cards than on price or coverage, then Vodafone's latest entertainment offer could be worth a look. In addition to its Sky Sports and Spotify entertainment packs, the carrier today threw TV and movie streaming into the mix by bundling a six-month Netflix subscription when you sign up to one of its Red 4G plans. There's a catch, though: You'll need to pick a minimum £26-per-month plan, which furnishes you with 3GB of data (although it is unlimited for the first three months). That's fine for browsing and social updates, but it's worth noting that Netflix streams consume up to 1GB per hour for SD video and up to 3GB on HD content, which could burn through your allowance in double-quick time. That isn't to say you can't utilise the free Netflix pass over a WiFi connection, but it pays to be mindful when the operator says you can "stream your favourite shows and films on the move." Vodafone will let you select Netflix as your entertainment pack of choice from between July and December, so put that upgrade on hold if you want to catch the new series of Orange Is The New Black.

Any.DO makes a serious push toward bigger screens with new web app

Task-managing applications like Any.DO are known for helping you stay on top of things, like reminding us to pick up that milk on the way home -- because we all know how important it is to do that. But while the service has made its presence be felt on mobile, a dedicated web app is something that Any.DO users have long been waiting for. And now it's here. As of today, you can start using Any.DO outside of iOS and Android and on any browser, not just via a Chrome extension. For the most part, it'll be the same on your web browser as it is on the smartphone app, but there are some new features that Any.DO has tailored specifically for bigger screens. Focus Mode, as seen above, lets you quickly glance at what to-do's you have coming up; Planning Mode, meanwhile, shows multiple folders and allows tasks to be moved across one another.

As part of this announcement, Any.DO also let it be known that it has now reached 10 million users worldwide, and it is hoping the newly minted web app will only help it grow further. "There's a world of people who haven't considered us because they need a full web experience, right on their computer screens. Apple to fix iMessage bug that causes ex-iPhone users to lose their texts

Apple says it's fixed a server bug that was affecting "some" former iMessage users who had tried to switch to Android or another OS. However, it admits there's another problem with its messaging platform that it still hasn't managed to address. According to Re/code, the first bug was making it difficult for Apple staff to keep track of which phone numbers are currently associated with an iPhone -- information that is essential for the proper running of the iMessage. Without an accurate database, ex-iPhone users could find that some of their SMS messages are mistakenly treated as iMessages and sucked into the bowels of an Apple's datacenter, from whence they may never return. As for the remaining flaws, and iMessage's broader dependence on up-to-the-minute record-keeping, Apple says it's working on a fuller solution that will come in a "future software update." In the meantime, the best advice for any iPhone leaver is still to manually disable iMessage and return to regular SMS before they power down for the final time.

Facebook stops oversharing, defaults status updates to just friends

Previously, when you first joined Facebook, all of your posts would be shared with the world by default. Anyone who stumbled upon your profile could read anything you previously shared, be it a short update or a personal photo, unless you deliberately clicked away from "Public." Now, the social site's switched things up for the better, making "Friends" the new default for status updates. You don't have to do anything to take advantage, but now's as good a time as any to pay very close attention to your Facebook privacy settings. And maybe be a bit more selective when it comes time to add a new friend.

Reform of the NSA project "Emptied" passes to the House, but solves supporters

This is not exactly what privacy advocates and wanted the most technology companies, but it is something. The freedom of the United States Act passed by the House of representatives, but he escaped unscathed. While the main elements that have survived, lost other changes or upset. One of the changes controversial Bill, which came from the Judicial Committee has a broader definition of a "mandate of the specific selection" you their requirements used by the NSA to define data. The original language allowed the Government tried documents in connection with a "person, firm or company. Was he recorded "Address or device" in this list, leave room for the data request which adopted very wide 303 votes on the floor of the capital against 12 votes. Of course, the original version of the law was a much narrower definition, which led many proponents of privacy such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and technology companies such as Google, to delete support for the Bill, when he leaves too much room for abuse.

The amended law would control also customers of the approval by the Director of national intelligence, rather than the Attorney General, apparently from the intelligence community to self-regulate. The level of detail, which can share the company data requirements is proposed also the Wisconsin Republican Jim Sensenbrenner scale. The NSA is also entitled the devices "on" a specific target, rather than only the messages sent or received by the potential threat by get. These changes have betrayed leaving several defenders at the beginning of the printing of the draft of law. The EFF said it was "appalled" by the ' empty ' - law, which finally cleared the House. While companies such as Google and Facebook, supported the Bill have support.

But the law on the freedom of the United States is not without his supporters. Many in the House, including Sensenbrenner, believe it is a step in the right direction, it may be so low. Although this probably not the bulk-data collection is completed, it will confine access the NSA. Databases are now held by the Compagnies de Téléphone for 18 months and not indefinitely by the Government. The NSA have the information he wants, and specifically requesting the probable cause for applications. This is a pretty radical change in the current system, all data gathered by the Government, what it wants. Sensenbrenner detected problems but urged to support others that Bill said: "Let no ideal has become the enemy of the good." The Bill has the support of the White House, though it counts not much among privacy advocates.

The law on the freedom of the United States go now in the Senate the possibility of multiple changes. But if it because without significant change, it is almost guaranteed by President Barack Obama are announced.

«Minecraft» comes on Xbox and PlayStation 4 August

Minecraft play on a console is really great. It is basically the same delicious/terrifying experience of the PC, but in the comfort of your living room. What's not to love? Now, on the last generation consoles, there was at least an unfortunate side effect of the platform: the world of Minecraft procedurally generated was significantly less than what you could do on the PC. 4 versions come with an Xbox and PlayStation this month August this change. As Developer Studio Mojang said, "it provides significantly higher worlds and a greater distance from the draw as Xbox 360 Edition." " Hot dog!

Of course, the world of the most small generation Minecraft should suffice (and believe us, it is large enough), the PlayStation version of the Vita is also the month of August. Here's the even better news: If you have already purchased the game on the PlayStation 3, you have to Vita. A similar provision applies to people from switching the PS3/Xbox 360 versions on the PS4/AC versions: If you already own the previous version and want to upgrade to the current generation are, it's only $5. The agreement of the latter applies to the first year of its existence, then would soon-ish, hang it on the cheap to upgrade.

Will sweeten the games deal still further Sauvé develop load Gen/Vita until the current generation consoles (even if it is not possible to go back - be careful!). All updates to the versions of the latest generation comes packaged in the August version, and the whole package goes for $20 Oh, and lianas are always super, super creepy.

Google invites fiber not content for faster access providers

Annoyed that your Internet provider media-online-services deal with forced, just to ensure the quality of the whole time is expected? Do not worry about with Google fiber what. Gigabit grade ISP said that it is not charged companies for peering agreement, roads or anything else that gives content hosts and networks deliverable get she otherwise would. In fact, already be aligned with companies such as Netflix, in the rooms of the Google - there is no tears in this House of cards 4 K-workflow when using fibers.

Market research firm argues that there is simply no reason, so that it can extract money from other sites. Video not slowed down ultimately help in the network and a better connection each; Data transport is cheaper and customers are happier. We doubt that companies like Comcast or Verizon reconsider this position their strategies pay are to play anytime soon. It does not mean that you can implement fiber to Google, if you believe that paid prioritization violated the spirit of the net neutrality... assuming fiber in the first place, that is, you can.

EE Kestrel review: a good low-cost 4G phone, but with a Moto on its back

The adjectives "affordable" and "budget" often allude to something of inferior quality -- a questionable substitute for something more premium. Something out of financial reach. A few years ago, I would've assumed the same, having set up enough low-end Samsungs for family members to want only high-end handsets, extortionate contracts attached. Thanks to devices like Google's Nexus range and, most recently, the OnePlus One, we've never been more aware of value for money. The Moto G, in particular, proved that a solid smartphone could be an absolute bargain.

It's this newfound, positive connotation of affordable that EE's aiming for with its first own-brand smartphone, the Kestrel. Launched earlier this month for £99 on pay-as-you-go, or free from £14 per month on contracts, it's EE's play for the 4G-curious, money-conscious consumer. The Kestrel's LTE radio and inviting price tag aren't the sum of its selling points, either; there's also expandable storage and a very capable processor. Components such as the display and cameras are understandably more modest, but on paper, the Kestrel still ticks the value box. In the increasingly competitive area of low-cost handsets, however, the question isn't just whether the Kestrel is a worthwhile purchase, but whether you'll see it the same way a month later.EE Kestrel review

Meet the electric motorcycle that's now the fastest production bike in the world

The Lightning LS-218 boasts a model number that actually means something. Back in 2012, a prototype of the electric bike clocked in a wholly unnecessary (yet much appreciated) 218mph, helping it to win at Pikes Peak and setting it up to become the world's fastest production motorcycle. The finished version is now ready to make good on that promise, having just been revealed at the Quail Motorsport Gathering in California, prior to a scheduled launch in the summer -- at which point it'll likely cost upwards of $38,000.

The bike has a much sharper look now, but the key specs are just the same, including a liquid-cooled 200-horsepower motor and a max range of 180 miles, depending on which battery option you choose. The weight of the battery causes it to be a heavy ride (225kg / 495 pounds) compared to some gas-powered superbikes out there, but what makes the Lightning stand out is the incredible torque (168 ft-lb) delivered by its gearless, direct drive internals. If you want to get a taste of what that feels like while blowing past someone on the highway, check out the video below at 3:10 -- you'll see a white sedan disappear into the background so quickly that you can barely identify the make.

China bans the installation of Windows 8 on government computers

China believes that Windows 8 poses enough of a future security risk that it's banning government agencies from installing the operating system on any of its new computers. In a statement issued last week and picked up by China's official news agency today, the Central Government Procurement Center has dealt Microsoft a massive blow by stating that all desktops, laptops and tablets must now run an OS other than Windows 8. Consumers aren't affected, as it'll only focus on computers used by government offices. It's a curious decision, given the fact a reported 70 percent of Chinese computers run Microsoft's 13-year-old Windows XP platform, but it's believed officials are trying to stop agencies from being left in the cold should the company pull official Windows 8 support in the future. The government will now focus its efforts on its own Linux-based OS, which is an idea it's been flirting with for a while already, firstly by promoting its use in an official capacity and then by attempting to persuade consumers in China to switch too.

New telescopes could uncover a wormhole in our own galaxy

If you're ever unlucky enough to be sucked towards a super-dense black hole, you'll soon arrive at something called the event horizon -- from which nothing can escape, including light. Thanks to a new "earth-sized" radio telescope, scientists may soon know whether you'll become stretched out infinitely ("spaghetti-ized") or merely vaporized. Knowing which of those gory fates is correct will help astronomers in their quest to unify Einstein's theories involving planetary motion with sub-atomic quantum mechanics. Even more intriguingly, a separate telescope called the GRAVITY in Northern Chile may soon tell us if the Sagitarius 'A' black hole at the center of our own galaxy is actually a wormhole instead.

Leaving wormholes aside for a moment, the Event Horizon Telescope is designed to spy the structure of "regular" black holes. Located in Chile, it combines multiple radio telescopes around the world and an extraordinarily precise atomic clock to simulate one huge, earth-sized telescope. When trained on black holes, it should deliver pictures of a very bright ring of gas surrounding a circular dark spot, as close to "imaging" one as we're likely to get (considering they emit no light). Along with pretty pictures, it may give insight about whether a black hole's event horizon would allow matter in before elasticizing it or be an impenetrable "firewall" that incinerates anything foolish enough to enter.

The GRAVITY telescope, meanwhile, is designed to image black holes for a different purpose. Instead, it's looking to see if our own Milky Way galaxy's Sagitarius 'A' isn't a black hole at all, but a wormhole. Both types of structures contain an impenetrable event horizon, but are otherwise very different. For instance, black holes theoretically take a long time to form following the collapse of large stars and can be massive. Wormholes are also permitted by general relativity, but if they actually exist, were formed in a split second after the big bang and would be small structures. And as any science fiction buff knows, wormholes aren't bottomless pits like black holes but can join two vast sections of space-time, or even two separate universes. GRAVITY will detect the signature of our own black hole, and look for telltale energy signatures of wormholes created by orbiting plasma (see below). As for the rapid space-time travel, though, don't hold your breath -- while stabilizing a wormhole is theoretically possible, it wouldn't be easy.

Comcast and TWC voted most-hated ISPs in America's most-hated industry

America's Consumer Satisfaction Index doesn't have a lot of nice things to say about Comcast or Time Warner Cable. The two business, which are currently trying to merge with each other, were found to be the worst ISPs in the most-hated industry that the index covers. Time Warner has the dubious achievement of making an all-time low score of 56 out of 100, with Comcast coming in just ahead of it with 57. On the other end of the scale, the 12,248 participants reluctantly gave their blessing to Verizon's FiOS, with a score of 71, and AT&T's U-Verse, which scored 65. What will this mean if Comcast and TWC do create a nationwide "triple play" behemoth? Mammoth profits for some, and red-faced calls for plenty of others.

Apple now letting UK customers trade in their iPad at retail stores

Seven months after it began letting customers trade in their iPhones at its retail stores, Apple's expanded its Reuse and Recycle programme to include iPads. From today, anyone with an iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4 and iPad mini can walk into an Apple Store, hand over their tablet and receive credit towards a new iOS device. However, the company will not accept current-generation devices like the iPad Air or iPad mini with Retina display. As with its iPhone programme, Apple will assess the condition of devices before providing a trade-in value, so don't expect a huge return if your iPad has seen better days.

'EA Sports UFC' looks to bring out the mixed martial arts fighter in you

Given the success of franchises like FIFA and Madden, it's easy to see why EA would want to commit valuable resources to developing an MMA title, a sport that's been getting bigger and bigger over the past few years. But the road for creating this new game, dubbed EA Sports UFC, wasn't an easy one. The relationship between UFC President Dana White and EA had its complications a few years ago. Back then, the developer reportedly wasn't interested in making a title for the mixed martial arts company, which is what started the kerfuffle between them. Because of this, UFC eventually hooked up with THQ to create a game, while EA Sports went on to develop its own MMA series. Still, neither of these things lasted too long. And after the unfortunate demise of THQ, EA Sports eventually reached a deal with UFC, granting it licensing rights for the popular MMA league. The by-product? EA Sports UFC.

EA Sport's UFC, which is launching exclusively on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, offers everything you can expect from the big developer of sport titles. If you're familiar with FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25 or, for whatever reason, NBA Live 14, then you're going to feel right at home with the menus and game modes. The tile-based user interface is very simple to browse, and you soon learn that the modes found within the game are quite similar to those on other EA Sports franchises, like the ones mentioned above. There are things such as Fight Now, which quickly lets you jump into a match; Career Mode, wherein you can go from being a nobody to a famous ultimate fighter; and UFC Spotlight, which is a hub that gathers highlight videos from you, friends or the online community. You can also create a character (though only for personal use), challenge friends in what EA is calling Rivalries and do some training to improve your overall skills in the game.

Hands-on with surface Microsoft Pro 3

The new Surface Pro 3 is not the smallest tablet, which in fact did, Microsoft - it is the largest, with a 12-inch, 2160 x 1440 screen. But if you think this is only a breathing-space version of the old model, would be wrong. Apart from the fact that the largest, brings the most high-resolution surface, new tech pin, a new stand and a new keyboard to start. LifeLock pulls its apps portfolio, clears the data taking into account the security aspects

Portfolio applications are usually more comfortable than trying, watching a series of identity information and payment itself. This requires, however, that the apps are secure in the first place – and unfortunately, LifeLock learns this the hard way. Protection ID from the mobile application LifeLock wallet fixed and removed tool to the payment card security standard user data after learning his "perhaps not fully compliant" (based on the recent acquisition of lemon wallet). While there is no evidence of a crime, the company says that they want to play safe and only restore applications, if people trust them "without question."

The move will follow you have great many data LifeLock wallet have flooded. You may need you could afford the cards you already have at home can be to dig, and revenue will not be restored when you're tossing their paper copies. However, it is a potentially clever step to protect of the customers who realize that their data is at risk. It may also be necessary to avoid a confrontation with the Government, also - LifeLock must meet certain security requirements, led after a FTC 2010-decision, in which the company customers with fear-based marketing to mislead and was not enough to obtain identity information. In this sense, the displacement as much about the registration of the enterprise is like your skin.

Watch Michael Jackson's holographic return at the Billboard Music Awards

Michael Jackson isn't the first posthumous recording artist to be reconstituted by light projection -- Tupac got there first -- but it didn't stop the assembled crowds at the Billboard Music Awards whipping themselves into a frenzy during the performance. Naturally, it all coincided with Jackson's Xscape album, launched earlier this month, but the surprise was spoiled a few days early by litigation between several holographic companies over the tech being used. We've embedded ABC's coverage after the break although the performance looks a little flat on video. And don't worry: there's moonwalking.

It's unlikely to be the last holographic performance from a music artist that's no longer with us, but the notion of holographic music shows is gaining traction beyond that, whether it's for the fictional computer-generated (and Vocaloid-powered) Hatsune Miku, or even an entire attraction dedicated to K-Pop performances in Seoul, which, like the Billboard performance today, attempts to meld holographic video with real-life dance performers.

Fight the (super) power as Kim Jong Un in this bizarre retro-styled shooter

Ah, the '90s. A decade of mullets, heroin-addled rock-stars and 16-bit video games where North Korean dictators waged one-man wars against the United States. Wait, what? In Glorious Leader!, you play as modern-day despot Kim Jong Un in a retro-styled 2D fight against the entire United States Army. Over the course of seven levels, your task is to destroy the Western invaders either on-foot or on the back of a unicorn, and if you can enlist a pal, they'll play as Dennis Rodman. Seriously. Developer Moneyhorse Games stresses that the game is purely tongue-in-cheek and is promising a November release for mobile devices and the PC. Until then, if you want more Sega Genesis-styled mayhem, the teaser after the break will have to do.

Japan: the country where flip-phones refuse to die

The buttons are easier to type on, the battery lasts longer, it's familiar. No, we're not talking about BlackBerry this time, but the Japanese feature phone. Glorious, folding forefather to the smartphone, and the form-factor that gave birth to gara-kei, a shorthand phrase for "Galapagos phones". It's a negative term pointing to devices that simply wouldn't survive outside of Japan. However, it's not stopped the country's biggest carrier, NTT Docomo, from revealing two new feature phone models (and a refreshed paint job for an older phone) just last week. Our Engadget Japanese colleagues were told by Docomo's spokesman that these phones are still so popular with some customers that they practically sell themselves -- many still enter their stores looking for a new flip-phone, not a smartphone.

While developing countries continue to buy up feature phones, where prices continue to plummet, Japan's feature phones remain resistant to the smartphone substitution seen in western countries. Docomo has also started offering an unlimited voice call service -- a feature that's arguably more comfortable on longer-shaped feature phones and another reason for the carrier to continually refresh its gara-kei lineup.

Fujitsu's latest model, the F-07F, has a 13-megapixel camera, 1,000mAh battery and a 3.3-inch color display: specs that make it a high-end feature phone, but (camera aside) pale in comparison to cheap, entry-level smartphones like the Moto E. Here's one more surprising point: feature phones might cost less to make, but due to carriers subsidies for smartphones (in a bid to keep its customers upgrading), feature phones often cost more per month than mainstay Android devices from the likes of Samsung and Sony. There may have been a few smartphones in flip-phone clothing, but Japan's gara-kei aren't going anywhere soon.

Upcoming Xbox One update might let you use external drives

According to Microsoft product director Albert Penello, external drive support for the Xbox One has always been on the company's docket to enable in a future update. That refresh looks to be on the horizon after an unnamed Xbox developer took to Reddit to tease an image showing that very feature in action. Members of the Xbox One preview programme are often privy to early features, which have recently included improved Party Chat and manual checks for system updates, but this leak will likely attract the most attention. Although the Xbox One ships with a 500GB internal hard drive, blockbuster games can command 50GB without breaking a sweat. That game storage, of course, adds up over time. Attaching an additional drive will not only stop you from running out of space, it'll also stop you from voiding your warranty with a do-it-yourself replacement.

The future of Formula 1 could involve AR headsets and farting

What's the next frontier for F1? If these guys get their way, races will be run on intelligent tracks, drivers will wear augmented reality headsets and cars will breathe air for extra thrust. Team Lotus and the energy drink Burn (nope, us neither) have teamed up to produce Human Ignition, a documentary that imagines what Formula 1 could be like in 2022, while also telling you that energy drinks are really rad (it's embedded, in three parts, after the break). One of the concepts offered up was that the driver would wear an AR helmet that showed them the airflows around their vehicle, making it easier to slipstream their rivals. Another would be to have the cars re-shape their gills in motion in order for them to "breathe," drawing in more air and forcing it out for more thrust coming out of a bend. After which, the designers thought about how those jets could be used to create "dirty wind," channeling the airflow to prevent your rivals from slipstreaming you. Nasty.

Celebrate the 40th birthday of Rubik's Cube with today's Google Doodle

It must be hard being Ernő Rubik. Back in the 1980s, the architect and toy inventor had the rare good fortune of becoming one of very few self-made millionaires from communist Europe. But in the process he was horribly pigeon-holed. His patented Rubik's Cube sold 350 million units, while his other creations -- Rubik's Snake, Rubik's Magic, and presumably a few blocky buildings somewhere in Hungary -- barely got a mention. Today, you can contribute to the injustice of it all by celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Cube prototype, courtesy of a playable Google Doodle. Meanwhile, the inventor is currently touring the world with an exhibition that is pointedly titled "Beyond Rubik's Cube." Ernő, you have our sympathies.

Glasses-free 3D projector offers a cheap alternative to holograms

Holograms are undoubtedly spiffy-looking, but they're not exactly cheap; even a basic holographic projector made from off-the-shelf parts can cost thousands of dollars. MIT researchers may have a budget-friendly alternative in the future, though. They've built a glasses-free 3D projector that uses two liquid crystal modulators to angle outgoing light and present different images (eight in the prototype) depending on your point of view. And unlike some 3D systems, the picture should remain relatively vivid -- the technology uses a graphics card's computational power to preserve as much of an image's original information (and therefore its brightness) as possible.

It's not a flawless system, at least not right now. While the modulators work at a speedy 240Hz, the resulting output is just 40Hz. That's fast enough for movies and TV shows, but a far cry from the 60Hz-plus that many regular TV sets can manage. To get wider viewing angles, MIT has also built a special screen using lenticular lenses like those you find in toys and children's books. However, perfection isn't really the point here. So long as the technology keeps advancing, it could lead to projectors with a "good enough" holographic effect that tides people over until real holography is within reach.

Is this Samsung's Galaxy S5 Prime?

When a $600 smartphone isn't considered "premium," then we're all in deep, deep trouble. That's the problem facing Samsung's Galaxy S5, however, with scores of people hoping that an even more expensive version of the flagship is lurking just around the corner. The folks over at PhoneArena are showing off an image of what purports to be the "Galaxy S5 Prime," apparently packing a QHD display and some spec bumps to ensure it remains a few Snapdragon model numbers ahead of its immediate rivals. The other big alleged difference is that the handset will come with an aluminum body, in the hope of luring back any customers who are drawn towards the HTC One's shinier chassis. Naturally, there's no proof that such a device actually exists, but the images do show some subtle differences compared to the regular GS5 we know today: The optical blood pressure monitor appears to sit behind the same glass panel as the camera sensor, and there's no speaker grille on the lower-left quarter of the rear case. All in all, we're going to file this in the "we'll believe it when we see it" box, since even Samsung wouldn't be crazy enough to replace its flagship just months after launch, would it?

Shazam baffles UK users by dropping Spotify integration

If you, like us, regularly use Shazam to tag and add tracks to Spotify for later listening, we have some bad news: you may now find that option has gone. It comes as one of the unexpected consequences of a deal between the music discovery company and streaming service Deezer, which has now replaced its bigger rival in free versions of Shazam in Germany, Mexico, UK and Brazil. TechCrunch spotted that Deezer and Rdio now hold the two main "free" positions within the Shazam app, but also notes that the ad-free premium version Encore retains Spotify integration. In our tests, Shazam had removed Spotify tagging from the Encore Android app, despite still displaying the feature in screenshots on both the UK App Store and Google Play.

Given Shazam's response, the move appears to be a purely business decision: "The streaming space is getting extremely competitive and we are excited to see a lot of companies in this space interested in working with Shazam," company CRO told TechCrunch. "Every country is different and is its own market and its own opportunity, which is why streaming companies – as well as Shazam – need to take a country-by-country approach as we evaluate integration." The company's support pages suggest that it may be part of a trial and that "Spotify integration (which we're currently working on to improve) may be returned at a later date." But, if you'd rather not wait for Shazam to figure out its allegiances, rival SoundHound will suitably handle your tagging and Spotify playback needs. 0 Comments Share

'World's first' braille mobile phone goes on sale in the UK

Touchscreens may have kicked-off a mobile computing revolution, but they didn't do much for the visually impaired. OwnFone, which launched a customizable mobile phone for kids and the elderly back in 2012, is now offering its stripped-down handset with braille or raised text contact buttons. The 3D-printed hardware lets you select up to four contacts that can be assigned to the device, making it ideal for emergencies and people who need to stay in touch with family or carers on a regular basis. It's available right now for a base price of £60, plus an additional monthly charge of between £7.50 and £15.00 per month -- depending on how much call time you want or need.

Should 'Adorkable' 'Duckface' or 'Nomakeupselfie' be added to the dictionary?

How does the fusty council of elders that compose Collins' English Dictionary spend their time? Just like the rest of us, they're messing around on Twitter. In preparation for the twelfth edition of the tome, its creators have asked the site's users to vote for one of nine words to become an official part of the English language, just like sext and selfie. The options run from Gaybourhood (a Gay-friendly neighborhood), through Felfie (farmer-selfie), Duckface (don't make us explain this one) to Euromaidan (a pro-European protestor from Ukraine). You'll be able to vote between now and May 28th, after which we're going to commence a campaign to get the word Chumbumble, which we just invented, into the thirteenth edition.

Should any of these words be added to the dictionary?

«Assassin's creed: Pirates now available as a free-to-play browser game.»

Here is the thing about Assassin's creed: Pirates (you know, besides the obvious issue of Cape and sword): specially designed for mobile phones and tablets. Ubisoft has warned in fact from the outset that we see probably no version PC or the console. As of today, but you can do it on your computer after all - at least. Ubisoft released a version on the basis of a free Web browser, which play in the browser with touch input or a mouse and keyboard. That's right, is also that although Ubisoft with Microsoft developed in the Web game, it works chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari with all the popular browsers - and of course to say. As a bonus works in full screen, something on the net more titles can do it.

There are a few catches, but starting with the type of game. As well as Assassin's creed: Pirates is in fact a title of shoot-em-up in its original form, the Web version is a simple game (not that there anything wrong), where you ask for racing, to see your friends, who can run the fastest boat. In the settings menu in the left upper corner click, can dynamically change the weather in case you are bored with flat water racing. Speaking of which, that would be a good time, mark a further connection from Microsoft: the game uses Babylon.JS, a 3D open-source engine based on WebGL, JavaScript and typescript developed by the four evangelists of the developer for the company.

The second problem: the game runs on the desktop browser, which means that when you use a Tablet Windows with IE installed bad luck. For example, it does not work on the mobile version of Safari. (Moral of the story: to get a surface.) If one assumes that you have a Windows Tablet or a computer, the game is live now with the support of five languages and three levels of difficulty. Check it out!
