Apple explains how to fix its busted iOS 8 update, new one coming soon

Went ahead and downloaded the newest, freshest version of iOS for that new iPhone 6? Then immediately regret doing so? Apple's released a statement saying that users who have lost carrier service or Touch ID functionality should reinstall the initial version of iOS 8, until version 8.0.2 is ready to go. The company says this will take a few more days. We've got the full statement after the break.

"We have a workaround for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. Affected users can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes, for more information visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6487. We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users, and are working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it is ready in the next few days." Xbox a July update brings support for services and 'Likes' recordings

Microsoft has given viewers, next month get a glimpse of the development which new snap Services mode to Xbox just before its E3 press conference, but any attempt. Xbox One July update brings help for Achievements and 'Likes' on recordings

Microsoft gave viewers a peek at the continuing evolution of the Xbox One just ahead of its E3 press conference, but everyone should get to try out the new Snap mode for Achievements next month. That's because the feature is a part of the July update about to start testing, along with a few other tweaks. In case you missed the E3 preview, there's a video demo of the multitasking-ready new Achievements mode after the break, showing how it lets players track their progress while staying in the game, and even search for help on how to reach their goals.

Another change is helpful to gamers rocking a Kinect-less Xbox One, as double tapping the home button will pull up the Snap menu (since they clearly can't say "Xbox, Snap (insert app here)" and choose an app to run in the side bar. Double tapping already served to switch back and forth between running apps, but now it has another use. There's also a tweak to let people choose which language model their Xbox One responds to, even if it doesn't match the country they live in, and support for game publishers to sell digital bundles and sic compilations in the future. Last but not least, the activity feed and Game DVR are getting some post-MySpace style social features. You can "like" your favorite recorded clips, or notes that pop up in the activity feed while you're using the SmartGlass remote app. We wonder if those likes will ever cross over into other social networks or apps like YouTube and Twitter, but we'll have to wait for the full release next month to know how everything works for sure.

Upcoming Xbox One update might let you use external drives

According to Microsoft product director Albert Penello, external drive support for the Xbox One has always been on the company's docket to enable in a future update. That refresh looks to be on the horizon after an unnamed Xbox developer took to Reddit to tease an image showing that very feature in action. Members of the Xbox One preview programme are often privy to early features, which have recently included improved Party Chat and manual checks for system updates, but this leak will likely attract the most attention. Although the Xbox One ships with a 500GB internal hard drive, blockbuster games can command 50GB without breaking a sweat. That game storage, of course, adds up over time. Attaching an additional drive will not only stop you from running out of space, it'll also stop you from voiding your warranty with a do-it-yourself replacement.

Nintendo is making entirely new consoles for emerging markets (update)

Nintendo's Wii U woes are well known by this point, but the Japanese company's latest move to expand its gaming reach is incredibly unexpected. Rather than pare down the existing Wii U hardware for emerging markets, the outfit is developing entirely new consoles according to Bloomberg. "We want to make new things, with new thinking rather than a cheaper version of what we currently have," company president Satoru Iwata said. "The product and price balance must be made from scratch." Curious about what Iwata meant by "cheaper versions?" Well, the 2DS and Wii Mini might offer hints in the direction.

Update: Iwata has told Reuters that Nintendo will offer the new hardware in countries like China, and that it'd be targeted toward those with lower income and less gaming experience.

Netflix begins raising prices, but current users get a two-year freeze (update)

Remember that Netflix price hike we were warned about? Well, it's finally happening, and it's affecting potential streamers across Europe. We say potential because although the cost is rising by £1 and €1 in the UK and across Europe, to £6.99 and €8.99 respectively, it'll only affect those signing up for the first time. The good news is that if you're already a Netflix subscriber, you'll pay the same amount you always have for at least another two years. At this time, Netflix remains quiet over its US plans (it's not had the greatest of times when it's adapted packages and switched pricing in the past) but has said previously that it will raise subscriptions by $1 or $2. Chances are US customers will see prices rise by a dollar, giving Netflix the opportunity to sink more cash into future seasons of House of Cards

Update: US and Canadian users have now also begun receiving notification emails from Netflix and, as expected, they're seeing the same rise. New subscribers will now pay a dollar more at $8.99 a month, with existing customers enjoying a two-year grace period. Netflix is also making its single stream SD-only package official, and available for $7.99 per month -- $1 more than the test offers that popped up late last year.

FCC's new net neutrality rules opposed by 100+ internet companies (update: vote still on schedule)

 ?Despite FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler's insistence that he is on the side of an open internet, the controversy over proposed net neutrality rules continues to expand. Resistance to the new rules is now coming from voices within the FCC and major internet companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Yahoo and more. The plan was for the five commissioners to vote on their approval next Thursday, but today one of them, Jessica Rosenworcel, called to push back that vote by a month (update: an FCC spokesman says the vote will go forward as scheduled). Citing "real concerns" with Wheeler's proposal and a need for time to consider the "torrent of public response" received, she wants the delay so public conversation can continue. That would mean putting the agency's legal staff out front to explain the measures and answer questions in ways that are accessible to the public, instead of starting a Sunshine Period that would end the ability to accept public comment.

Comments from the public are getting noisier than ever also, as protesters were even marching in front of the FCC today. One of the other FCC commissioners, Mignon Clayburn, blogged about the concerns she expressed back in 2010 when the original rules were implemented, including prohibiting the controversial "pay for priority arrangements" completely.

points out that a number of internet companies have signed on to a letter (PDF) calling for the FCC to "protect users and Internet companies on both fixed and mobile platforms against blocking,discrimination, and paid prioritization and...make the market for Internet services more transparent." Names on the letter include over 100 internet companies including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Level 3, Cogent and many others.
Update: According to FCC spokesman Neil Grace, the vote will proceed as scheduled. "Chairman Wheeler fully supports a robust public debate on how best to protect the Open Internet, which is why he intends to put forward his proposals for public comment next week. Moving forward will allow the American people to review and comment on the proposed plan without delay, and bring us one step closer to putting rules on the books to protect consumers and entrepreneurs online."

According to recent news reports, the Commission intends to propose rules that would enable phone and cable Internet service providers to discriminate both technically and financially against Internet companies and to impose new tolls on them. If these reports are correct, this represents a grave threat to the Internet.

Instead of permitting individualized bargaining and discrimination, the Commission's rules should protect users and Internet companies on both fixed and mobile platforms against blocking, discrimination, and paid prioritization, and should make the market for Internet services more transparent. The rules should provide certainty to all market participants and keep the costs of regulation low.

Such rules are essential for the future of the Internet. This Commission should take the necessary steps to ensure that the Internet remains an open platform for speech and commerce so that America continues to lead the world in technology markets.

If you've invested in Sky's super-cheap Now TV box, the chances are that you've also been enjoying the company's introductory pricing it offers on its streaming packages. Sky's entertainment and movie bundles are currently priced at £4.99 and £8.99 per month respectively, but are set to rise to £6.99 and £9.99 later this month. At first glance, it looks like the broadcaster has chosen the optimum time to recoup some of the investment its made in exclusivity for shows like Game of Thrones, but the reality is a little less scandalous.

Prices were actually meant to shoot up in March, but Sky decided at the time to extend the introductory offers until May 29th. So while it appears like the Lannisters are after yet more coin ahead of the cut-off in the coming weeks, it was actually the plan all along. It's probably not the news you were hoping for as you wait to see whether Daenerys Targaryen and her dragons can conquer the seven kingdoms, but the Now TV honeymoon period originally had an earlier deadline, so you've still had better luck than Ned and family.

Update: Since the time of writing, Sky has decided to put the price hike on hold, for now at least. The note on Sky's Now TV forums doesn't offer any new timeline, but we assume it means you'll be seeing out the current series of Game of Thrones, and watching all your favourite characters die, no doubt, at the current monthly rate.
