Microsoft pushes back the Xbox One's launch in China

byJon Fingas|@jonfingas|1 day ago

Xbox One

Bad news if you were hoping to pick up an Xbox One in Beijing next week: Microsoft has just delayed the game system's launch in China from September 23rd to sometime before the end of the year. The company isn't saying just what prompted the last-minute pushback, but it claims that it needs extra time to offer "first rate gaming and entertainment experiences" -- in short, something is still pretty rough around the edges. Whatever the reasons, Chinese gamers will have to wait a little while longer to get their first major console since the country lifted its years-long ban on fun-minded machines like this.

Microsoft will double your free OneDrive storage if you auto-upload photos

byTimothy J. Seppala|@timseppala|23 hours ago

Microsoft has been rather generous with free OneDrive storage lately, and that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon. Now Redmond is bumping the previous gratis 15GB up by 100 percent, to 30GB. What's the catch? There isn't much of one, really. All Redmond says you have to do (regardless of if you're a new user or seasoned veteran) is activate auto-upload on your device of choice's camera roll between now and the end of the month -- even on a Windows PC. Seems simple enough. The announcement focuses on the storage woes that've been associated with upgrading to iOS 8, and given the iPhone 6 Plus' fancy video tricks like HD time-lapse capture we'd imagine the off-device storage should come in pretty handy.

The cloud is a big money maker for Microsoft as it rethinks hardware and content

BYDana Wollman @danawollman18 hours ago

0

We always want to know how Microsoft is doing, but today we're paying especially close attention: The company just released its earnings for its fourth fiscal quarter, the first full quarter that new CEO Satya Nadella was on the job. Also, let's not forget that Microsoft just announced it's cutting 18,000 jobs and axing Xbox Entertainment Studios. So how'd the company do? Not bad, actually: The company says revenue is up, largely thanks to its cloud business (previously led by Nadella himself). In particular, Microsoft has its loyal business customers to thank: The company saw big gains in commercial cloud revenue (up 147 percent), Windows licenses and server products. Other honorable mentions include Bing (up 40 percent), Microsoft Office 365 subscriptions and revenue from PC makers.

Largely missing from the report: mentions of hardware. Though the company's new mobile business added nearly $2 billion in revenue, but the firm also took a $38 million hit on Surface RT inventory after canceling the Surface Mini, according to Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood. Basically, then, there are few surprises here: Microsoft made the most money off its bread and butter -- things like enterprise services, the cloud and its core Windows business. And to be honest, we expected as much. Consider that earlier this month, Nadella posted an open letter to employees, reiterating that its mission was to offer productivity tools in a "cloud-first" world. That would indeed seem to be what Microsoft is good at.

All told, the company generated $4.61 billion in profit on $23.38 billion in revenue. To put that in perspective, revenue for the fourth-quarter was up 18 percent over the year-ago period. Profit by 7 percent, but that's to be expected considering Microsoft recently closed its massive $7 billion purchase of Nokia's mobile division. That's it for raw numbers, but Microsoft will be holding a conference call later today to discuss its earnings in more detail. We'll be tuning in, and will update this post as we learn more.

Update: On a call with investors, Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood confirmed that that $38 million hit the company took on "Surface RT inventory" was actually a product that had been in development, but was later canceled. That would be the Surface Mini.

Microsoft closing Xbox Entertainment Studios

BYTimothy J. Seppala @timseppala11 hours ago

0

As part of its massive round of layoffs, Microsoft is closing Xbox Entertainment Studios (XES), the wing dedicated to producing original video content for the Xbox platform. All is not lost however, as Halo: Nightfall, the Spielberg-produced Halo TV series and Signal to Noise (whose first episode chronicles Atari's rise and fall) will all still continue as planned. We were also told that the studio's Nancy Tellem along with Jordan Levin and "some" of the XES team will remain on staff and working on the aforementioned in-production programming. In an email today (pasted in full after the break) Xbox head Phil Spencer notes that change is never easy, but he believes the studio closure will help the company "better align with longterm goals." We've reached out to the affected studios about what this means for them and will update this post should we hear back.

Recode's sources paint a different picture, however, saying that the studio was disorganized and lacked a fully established business model. Both of which turned off any studio partners and thusly complicating securing any more premium content.

"I hope you have had a chance to read today's mails from Satya. I wanted to take a moment to share a few thoughts on what this means for our team and some of the changes we are making as a result.

In last week's mail outlining some of the steps towards creating the culture and organization to bring our ambitions to life, Satya called out the strategic importance of Xbox as a strong consumer brand, a creative center for gaming and a leader in bold innovation. Every member of Team Xbox should be incredibly proud of the impact and reach your work has within the walls of Microsoft, with our developer community and most importantly, with consumers.

Microsoft is the productivity and platform company for a mobile-first and cloud-first world, and games are the single biggest digital life category in a mobile-first world. Success in this category, by growing a robust Xbox business, brings additional value to Microsoft. I have stated this before, but for Xbox to be successful, we must remain committed to being a consumer-driven organization with the mission of meeting the high expectations of a passionate fan base, to create the best games and to drive technical innovation.

As part of the planned reduction to our overall workforce announced today and in light of our organization's mission, we plan to streamline a handful of portfolio and engineering development efforts across Xbox. One such plan is that, in the coming months, we expect to close Xbox Entertainment Studios. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the accomplishments from the entire team in XES. They have built an impressive slate of original programming and pioneered interactive entertainment on Xbox, such as the innovative reality series 'Every Street United' that succeeded in uniting audiences around the globe during the recent World Cup.

I am pleased that Nancy, Jordan and members of the XES team remain committed to new, original programming already in production like the upcoming documentary series 'Signal to Noise' whose first installment takes on the rise and fall of gaming icon Atari and of course, the upcoming game franchise series 'Halo: Nightfall,' and the 'Halo' Television series which will continue as planned with 343 Industries. Xbox will continue to support and deliver interactive sports content like 'NFL on Xbox,' and we will continue toenhance our entertainment offering on console by innovating the TV experience through the monthly console updates. Additionally, our app partnerships with world-class content providers bringing entertainment, sports and TV content to Xbox customers around the world are not impacted by this organizational change in any way and remain an important component of our Xbox strategy.

Change is never easy, but I believe the changes announced today help us better align with our long-term goals. We have an incredible opportunity ahead of us to define what the next generation of gaming looks like for the growing Xbox community. I have a great deal of confidence in this team and know that with clarity of focus on our mission and our customers we can accomplish great things together. We already have.

Thank you again for all you do for Xbox.

Phil

Microsoft hints that Windows Phone will soon let you put apps in folders

BYJon Fingas @jonfingas11 hours ago

Nokia's App Folder in Windows Phone

Windows Phone already lets you store apps in Start screen folders, but it's a bit of a hack -- you have to use Nokia App Folder to get the feature in the first place, and you're really just opening one app to launch another. Microsoft might be near fixing that discrepancy, though. The company has posted instructions (since pulled) hinting that a future revision of Windows Phone 8.1 will include native folder support. Much like iOS and some flavors of Android, you'll only have to drag tiles on top of each other to make folders and tidy up your home page.

The document suggests that you'll need "Windows Phone 8.1 Update" to see this new trick, although it's not clear whether this is a reference to the finished 8.1 release (expected to arrive this summer) or a patch that would appear sometime later. We've asked Microsoft whether or not it can shed more light on the subject, but it's already safe to say that the company hasn't shown all its upgrade cards just yet. 0 Comments

Then pass Microsoft company on Sony's PlayStation in China

Only for about a month, Microsoft has announced that he will bring the Xbox in China come September, his ban courtesy of the local government lifted rather lax imported video games and consoles. Today, Sony has finally confirmed that the PlayStation console of Redmond in the far East actually will join. As Microsoft with China BesTV cooperation Sony called the cooperation with a local company Shanghai Oriental Pearl culture development (DCP short). SINA tech pointed out, it's interesting that the BesTV and fads are media group part of Shanghai.

Joint venture between Sony and DCP are two companies: one that handle manufacturing and sale of equipment and other services through sale, license, distribution and r & E software handle. Sony China holds 70% of the newly-formed Sony Computer Entertainment (Shanghai) (no doubt, who manages the hardware part), but only 49% of other new business development called Shanghai Oriental Pearl Sony computer entertainment culture.

As you can imagine, the announcement that the joint venture "will introduce" quality, healthy games noted suitable to the national conditions of China and the preferences of the national actors, because according to Government policy. This means that we will probably see that censored much PlayStation games out there (and also less games in General), as well as our hypothesis is that the consoles still not compatible with play, which could be released in other countries. That is, it should not be forgotten that China joint venture Nintendo iQue, never this kind of regional applied on the DS and DS 3-limitation when it is sold.

What is not clear is when and to whom the PlayStation products officially hits stores in China, but formerly as Sony tried, about his long preparation for this launch, we would not be surprised if the Japanese company Microsoft in the race here.

Microsoft announces his Tablet is still important 12-inch Surface Pro 3

When Microsoft invited us, a "small hit" here in New York City, we thought that meant a smaller cutout mini was armored in order. Instead, the company has announced a larger surface area, the Surface Pro 12 inch 3. Like the previous Surface Pro pen input, supports a good choice for creative professionals, especially with this screen of 2,160 x 1,440 opaque pixels. In addition to the largest that most high-res surface again, this is however also she thinnest ever produced with an Intel Core i7 processor. Ultimately, that measures the thing just 9.1 mm (0.36 inches) thick, which tied with one iPad more older-Gen - incredibly, if you think that it is more a Ultrabook than a tablet. Surface Pro 3

Microsoft wants his new pen to a large part of the Surface Pro 3

Satya Nadella and his team organize an event in New York, where Microsoft surface Pro 3 has already uncovered. It is not surprising that companies place emphasis on integrated spring. "If you hold a pen in his hand, he the light must feel," said Panos Panay on the stage. But what Microsoft just to get there to get? According to Panay, it is very important to know that the surface Pro 3 pin is not "a pen", but rather meant to mimic a real pen, ink cartridge, with a similar form factor and weight.PIN on Surface Pro 3

Hands-on with surface Microsoft Pro 3

Therefore, it was not the mini for surface that we had expected. But hey, we had fresh material, that's all that matters. The new Surface Pro 3 is not the smallest tablet, which in fact did, Microsoft - it is the largest, with a 12-inch, 2160 x 1440 screen. But if you think this is only a breathing-space version of the old model, would be wrong. Apart from the fact that the largest, brings the most high-resolution surface, new tech pin, a new stand and a new keyboard to start. In addition, it is surprisingly thin and light, when you consider that this thing is big and powerful enough to replace a Ultrabook in its own right. As a heads up, we take a House of today's press conference,-device, so you can expect a full review of our website soon to see. In the meantime, however, here are a few first impressions for you are correct.Microsoft surface Pro 3 hands-on

The Xbox One price drop isn't just to boost sales, says Microsoft

This morning, less than a year after Microsoft unveiled its Xbox One, the game console's price dropped from $500 to $400. How's Microsoft making up for the price difference? By removing Kinect, of course. The camera/microphone peripheral introduced halfway through Xbox 360's life cycle was a standard in every Xbox One sold since launch last November, but no longer. As of this June, a second option will exist on retailer shelves. A less expensive option. And Xbox marketing lead Yusuf Mehdi is all about that option:

"We have 80-plus million Xbox 360 users today who want an Xbox One, and many of them tell us, 'For me, it's an affordability issue. I'm gonna get there, it's just a question of time. If you make it more affordable, then I'll upgrade faster.' So this is an opportunity to really make it easier for them to get there at their pace."

Of course, providing that option is in the interest of spurring sales. The issue isn't that Xbox One consoles aren't selling, it's that they're not selling as fast as Sony's PlayStation 4. Currently, Xbox One is a couple million units behind PlayStation 4, and it's impossible to cite those numbers without considering today's news as directly attributable. Mehdi doesn't agree.

Using the Xbox One's Kinect for voice commands is still pretty hit-or-miss for many, and Microsoft knows it. With the console's next update, Redmond is adding an option for speech data collection as a way to crowdsource the sensor's improvement. Writing on his blog, Xbox's Major Nelson says that the more voice samples the company has to add to its algorithms, the more accurate the console can be. If you aren't keen on the company collecting samples of your voice (which is entirely understandable!), it's an entirely opt-in process. Should you want to help out, however, all you need to do is dip into the console's privacy settings and enable it. This isn't the first time that Microsoft has done such, though -- a similar function was in place on the Xbox 360 as well.

Update: The 312MB update is rolling out to those in the preview program now, check the new update button under System in the Settings menu to download it.

The update also brings in a few user-requested features, too. The Xbox One is also getting a sound mixer for snapped apps and volume control for voice chat. The former gives you control over which app on-screen is the louder of the pair -- perfect for listening to The Daily Show in the background while trouncing ghosts in Forza 5, we'd imagine -- while the latter allows for control of volume levels if you're using Kinect for voice chat.

What's more, the on-demand system update button that arrived with the last ...update is finally getting some action. This'll allow you to grab the latest system software as soon as it becomes available -- no more waiting for the roll-out fairy.

It's been almost a year since Microsoft first announced its live-action Halo TV series, but the amount we know about it hasn't exactly changed that much. That stops now, as we've learned that Redmond and premium network Showtime are deep in talks to tag-team distribution, according to a recent Variety report. Apparently, the program is scheduled to debut first on the cable channel and then become available on the Xbox platform with "enhanced interactivity" of some sort. A deal with a pair of showrunners is also close to being locked, as Variety tells it, which indicates that at least some progress has been made toward moving into production. With this not surfacing during Microsoft's original-programming focused event earlier this week, though, it's possible that we could hear new details (or maybe even see some video evidence) of the Spielberg-produced drama come E3.
