IRS test their own medicine, it will pay Microsoft a million people for the support of Windows XP
Generally, the internal revenue service is payable at this time of year, but Uncle Sam is going to be the pockets of someone more this season because of his attachment to Windows XP. In the case where you've not heard, support for XP formally arrested April 8, meaning that Microsoft already will not provide support or security updates for the venerable operating system. However, government computers may not be vulnerable, so the IRS will pay Microsoft millions of dollars for custom help to keep their machines safe and functional. Currently, more than half the Agency still XP despite Microsoft tell the world which would cease support for the operating system to PC six years ago in 2014. The plan is to have all machines of the IRS in Windows 7 at the end of the year - and at that time the watch begins marking the transition to Windows 8. No emergency, however, Microsoft is committed to support Windows 7 until 2020. Government delays begin!

NASA is looking for an alternative to the battery power your spaceship
NASA knows that a conventional battery not be cut at some point, especially when vehicles travel in deep space. He called for this purpose, the public institutions and companies to present alternative proposals to the battery. The initiative will lead to two cell design low energy, such as chemical and containers, as well as advanced features that could overcome existing lithium. Ideally, NASA must obtain security of storage or energy which provides more power without a drink in longevity.

Samsung's 'Kapture The Moment' event hints at new camera-centric phone
Samsung just posted a mysterious invitation for an April 29th event, but it'd be more intriguing if we hadn't already seen alleged specs and a picture (after the break) of the soon-to-be-revealed device. That'd be the Galaxy K Zoom, reportedly an Android 4.4.2 KitKat camera phone with a 20-megapixel 10X optical zoom and Xenon flash. The invite seems to confirm a change from the usual matching of Samsung's flagship-du-jour name, like last year's Galaxy S4 Zoom. That may be because the new device bears little resemblance to the current Galaxy S5, with the leaked specs showing a much milder quad-core 1.6GHz CPU and 4.8-inch, 720p screen. In case you missed all the qualifiers, none of this has been verified by Samsung, so don't get too excited (or not) until the end of the month.

LG's top-end G3 phone will rock a Quad HD display
So far, we've only come across beyond-1080p panels in a couple of Chinese phones, like the Oppo Find 7 and the Vivo Xplay 3S. But the spec is definitely about to go mainstream, as LG has just confirmed to us that the successor to the G2 will deliver a "Quad HD" resolution, with four times as many pixels as 720p (that's 2,560 x 1,440, if you want to count 'em). Based on earlier leaks, it's likely that the G3 will have a 5.5-inch display, which means we'll be looking at a pixel density of around 530 ppi -- not far off double what you'd get from a printed glossy magazine.
What's the point? Well, with the Chinese phones it was all about the rendering of the complex character set, which really benefited from the extra detail, but on global phones we're not so sure. Onscreen photos also tend to get a boost, to the point where they look almost analog -- a bit like the way 35mm prints used to look on a lightbox -- but ultimately we'll just have to wait and see how well LG implements the technology. Based on last year's schedule for the G2, we might see an official launch in the summer, with availability by the fall. 0 Comments ShareVia: Android Community, Ubergizmo

Age of Empires marches on mobile devices this summer
Even if we wanted to, we can't (rather, shouldn't) play Age of Empires all day. This summer it'll become a time-sinking possibility, however, with an AoE spin-off headed to iOS, Android and Windows Phone. The teaser video dropped by Microsoft doesn't reveal much outside the broad release date. Age of Empires: World Domination only gets mere seconds of gameplay teased so it's hard to derive exactly how much depth the mobile iteration will go into. Fortunately, horses, spears and Huns, at least, have already made the transition.
Update: We've edited this article to reflect the fact that the game will come to Android and WinPho, as well as iOS.

Microsoft offers early download of Windows Phone 8.1
We get it. You want to download Windows Phone 8.1 as soon as possible just to see if Cortana is really as cool on a mobile device as she is in the Halo series. Or, perhaps it's the new Action Center and swipe keyboard that strike your fancy. Whatever reason you have for wanting to play with the latest version of Windows Phone ASAP, now's your chance. Microsoft has just announced that a developer preview of the new update is finally available for download, but as the name of the build implies, this is meant for third-party developers so they can get a good head start in prepping their apps ahead of widespread release. That said, you can still get in on the action, even if you've never written a line of code in your life -- there's just a few risks involved.
First of all, according to Microsoft's site, you'll need to register as a developer with App Studio for free. Technically, this tool allows you to create apps that you can run on your own Windows Phone (if you want to publish them to the Store, that'll cost you $20), but it's also a workaround that enables you to install the latest and greatest previews on your phone at your leisure. Heck, you'll still be able to upgrade to the final build as soon as it's available on whichever device you have -- you just can't revert back to the previous version.
There's a few other things you must know before you start clicking buttons. Most importantly, performing the early upgrade will likely void your warranty in the process, so keep that in mind; additionally, these builds only consist of the Microsoft-sanctioned part of the update -- in other words, any manufacturer or carrier customizations (and drivers) will only be available when that phone's official release comes out. If the privilege of playing with new firmware before everyone else is too much of an opportunity for you to pass up, head here to get started.

Windows Phone 8.1 review: Microsoft's mobile OS finally feels whole
Android, iOS, Windows Phone. Each of these mobile platforms had to start somewhere, and none were anywhere near perfect on the first try. Fortunately, each OS gets better with each iteration until, at some point, it all just clicks. Arguably, Windows Phone just came of age with its latest update, version 8.1.
Even before today, Windows Phone only had a few big holes remaining and indeed, 8.1 appears to fill those gaps. In particular, the OS now has a fancy notification center in addition to those signature Live Tiles; the keyboard now allows for swipe gestures; and last but not least, it now has Cortana, a virtual assistant to take on Siri, Google Now and Samsung's S-Voice. The 8.1 update is a fairly significant one, and I got the opportunity to take it for a spin ahead of the official developer preview's launch. It may not be perfect yet, but it's clear Windows Phone has finally grown up.

UN: fixing climate change is affordable
One of the biggest arguments against fixing climate change is that it would cost too much. Not so, says the UN's climate change panel, which has found that abandoning fossil fuels would only knock around 0.06 percent off the world's GDP. According to the report, if low-carbon energy quadruples by 2050, then the planet may only warm by two degrees -- the upper limit before The Day After Tomorrow-style catastrophes are commonplace. The panel recommends switching to renewables like solar, wind and hydropower, with nuclear the next best option and biofuels in third, since the latter uses the same land and resources needed for growing crops. Maybe it's time that we all started cycling to work.

The 'world's smallest' laptop adapter debuts on Kickstarter for $79
Back at CES in January, MIT spin-off FINsix unveiled the "world's smallest" 65W laptop adapter, and it even managed to nab a nomination for our Best Startup award. Fast forward to today, the company is launching this nifty device -- now dubbed the Dart -- on Kickstarter for as low as $79 per unit. Here's a quick reminder: this charger is four times smaller and six times lighter than its regular counterparts, and it also comes with a 2.1A USB port. The enabling technology here is a highly efficient VHF (very high frequency) power conversion, as refined and patented by MIT. As you'd expect, the Dart is compatible with most laptops, and there's even a special version for MacBooks that don't need more than 65W of power. FINsix laptop adapter is tiny, yet powerful

Facebook's making moves to challenge PayPal
After attempts to kickstart its own virtual currency stalled, Facebook may soon get into the business of sending real money between you and your friends. According to The Financial Times, the social network is "only weeks away" from receiving the necessary approval in Ireland to operate its own e-money service. If given the green light, the company could effectively become a financial institution like PayPal (at least in Europe), allowing it to store and send money between millions users all over the continent. Facebook is said to have discussed partnering with at least three London-based firms that offer app-based international money transfers, but has yet to confirm it plans to take responsibility for your funds. With Zuckerberg and co. already facing user trust issues over the social network's use of ads, throwing money into the mix may only complicate matters.

T-Mobile is killing overages on all plans starting this June
T-Mobile hasn't quite been as UnCarrier as some would like. Despite the network's turn toward overage-free service, there's still occasional chances that you'll pay extra for heavy use -- especially if you're on a grandfathered plan. That won't be a problem for long, though, as the carrier will soon eliminate overage fees across the board. You shouldn't be seeing any rude surprises on your bill from June onward. The move won't deliver huge savings unless you regularly pay surcharges -- and you'll still have to deal with throttling -- but it's good to have some reassurance that your costs won't get out of control in the future.

The UK's stolen phone market is as healthy as ever
It may be easy to report and track stolen smartphones in the UK, but that's not preventing some of the country's shops from selling these ill-gotten handsets. A BBC undercover operation has revealed that at least eight stores in London are willing to buy stolen phones, even when the hardware is obviously locked down. One of the locations was only willing to make an exchange outdoors, but none of them were seriously concerned about a run-in with the law.
It's not hard to understand why retailers would be so brazen. As forensics experts will tell you, it's easy to stop tracking if you can restore a phone's software. You can also change a device's unique IMEI number to get around attempted service blocks. It's uncertain what will happen to the stores caught by the BBC op, but they're likely just the tip of the iceberg -- until kill switches and other more serious anti-theft measures come into play, you'll want to be careful about using your phone on the street. 0 Comments ShareSource: BBC

Swedish students cook up a way to pay with your hands
Big companies have been trying to make in-store payments with mobile devices a thing for years, which makes Frederik Leifland's approach awfully refreshing by comparison. There's no smartphone, no NFC chip, no apps involved here -- all you need to pay for your Frosted Flakes and Nutella is the palm of your hand. You see, Leifland (of Sweden's Lund University) has cooked up a way to identify shoppers by the unique branching pattern of veins in their hands.
Conceptually, it all sounds simple enough: you take your comestibles to the register, punch in the last four digits of your phone number, and plop your hand down on a scanner. Voilà -- the amount gets deducted from your bank account and you're on your merry way. That said, the process of getting it all set up is a bit hairier. You have to swing one of the scanner-enabled stores, give it your social security number, bank info and phone number, then scan your palm three times. After that's all done, you then activate your service on its website and fill out another form. Leifland says that each subsequent payment transaction only takes about five seconds to complete though, so you'll have to do that cost-benefit analysis on your own.
It should come as no surprise that Leifland is building a startup called Quixter (no relation to Netflix's ill-fated DVD rental spinoff) around this palm-sensing tech, and the team has scanners set up at 15 stores and cafes around the campus. We've reached out to the Quixter team to see if they plan to (or even can) bring this tech to a deli near you, so stay tuned.

Xiaomi clones Kickstarter project for its new one-button Android controller (update)
Last October saw Pressy -- a one-button Android controller that plugs into your device's headphone jack -- eclipse its initial Kickstarter goal of $40,000, ending with almost $700,000 in its coffers. Apparently Xiaomi was paying attention, because the Chinese firm has teased an eerily similar product of its own that follows Pressy's look and functions almost to a "T." The metal cylinder plugs into a Xiaomi headset jack, and the button's function can be configured to perform 10 different tasks (taking a photo or dialing a specific contact, for example) based on 10 different click types. The major similarities stop at price and availability. As Tech in Asia reports, Xiaomi's version is called the MiKey, costs 4.9 Yuan (or $0.79) and will launch abroad this April 8th. Stateside, it doesn't appear to have a name or release date just yet, and Hugo Barra is asking Google

KitKat's share of Android devices more than doubles to 5.3 percent
After months of treading water, Android 4.4 KitKat is finally taking off. Google reports that 5.3 percent of Android users are running the newer OS version as of early April; that's more than twice the 2.5 percent that it claimed one month earlier. There's no official explanation for the jump, but it's most likely thanks to a wave of KitKat upgrades from HTC, LG and Samsung. Most older versions lost share as a result. It could be a long, long time before KitKat overtakes Jelly Bean (which dipped to 61.4 percent), but the transition is under way -- and it's only likely to accelerate now that flagships like the Galaxy S5 and new One are reaching store shelves.

All screens welcome: watching sports is now easier than it's ever been
Opening Week is upon us and Major League Baseball teams have already started their quest to win this season's World Series, while fans all over gear up for what will hopefully be a very exciting year. And for those who can't make it to the ballpark on a regular basis, keeping up with their favorite team has become a relatively easy feat. A few weeks ago, the MLB, NBA, NHL and others struck a partnership with Time Inc. to launch 120 Sports, with the idea being to provide an online hub that delivers sports video content in a timely manner and across different platforms. This announcement came shortly after the introduction of NFL Now, an all-new digital network that aims to immerse football fans in the ultimate viewing experience -- there will be full on-demand games, highlights, analysis and a lot more to watch.
Both initiatives signal how American sports leagues are adapting to the times by introducing viewing experiences that aren't necessarily tied to being at home. Not everyone will be satisfied with the way the content is delivered, but it's worth acknowledging that leagues like the NFL, NBA and MLB are going the extra mile to try to give people what they want.
Of course, these services often face limitations due to contracts with TV broadcasters, which make things like showing all live games, in the case of NFL Now, practically impossible in the US. But if catching your local team playing live doesn't matter that much, chances are you won't be disappointed. Not all services are limited in this way, though. MLB.TV, for example, does offer regular season games to watch live, with some blackout restrictions -- and the same is true for offerings from a number of other professional leagues. The blackouts might be considered a downside for some, but if you're a transplant, these services are all but made for you. So, if you're from California and (wisely) make the move to The Big Apple, you'll be able to catch, say, the Oakland A's live. As for you non-transplants, MLB does make in-market games available at least 90 minutes after each game is finished.
The limitations that come stock with these services are the result of broadcasting agreements that have been in place for years, and they will continue to be for many more to come. For instance, when questioned about the lack of live games, NFL Now General Manager Cory Mummery said to us, "The NFL is very happy with our long-standing relationships with our broadcast and cable partners, and NFL Now should serve as an additive experience to live television consumption." Now, we shouldn't be surprised to hear this, since the NFL's business with US network and cable/satellite providers is worth billions and billions of dollars. Until that changes, customers shouldn't expect drastic changes in the way the NFL, or anyone else, handles the way it delivers its games. "We are not planning to include live games at this time for our domestic users, but may consider offering some live game content to our international fans," Mummery told Engadget.

Sprint sends out invites for April 29th event, may talk about HD Voice
Well, theres a noodle-stretcher to start your day with. Sprint has just sent out invites to an event on April 29, and it's being characteristically coy about what is going down. The carrier's chosen imagery and tagline leave little to the imagination though: this rodeo is all about audio, and our guess is that CEO Dan Hesse probably has some more to say about Sprint's HD Voice rollout. Sprint's been slowly rolling out the service (which it claims will provide "crystal clear" call quality to owners of compatible devices) in Kansas City, with Philadelphia and Baltimore to follow in the coming weeks. Hesse's ultimate goal is to get the whole nation flying under that HD Voice banner by July, and it probably won't be long before he steps on-stage to let us know how thats working out for him.

Amazon launches Fire TV, an Android-powered streaming and gaming set-top box for $99
We have been waiting for it for quite sometime, but now Amazon is finally ready to make its play for the living room. Fire TV is not a barebones device like the Chromecast, it's a powerful Android-driven platform with ties to the broader Amazon ecosystem. Inside the slim black plastic box is a quad-core CPU with a full 2GB of RAM--that makes it more akin to a high-end smartphone than your typical streaming device. And its incredibly slim, shorter than a dime, with barely enough clearance for the small selection of ports around back, which includes the standard HDMI as well as optical audio and Ethernet.
The interface is incredibly image heavy. Browsing through the Amazon video store is basically just scrolling through an endless barrage of movie posters presented in a moving 3D bar. And, at least during the demo, the hardware churned through the slick UI with nary a hiccup in sight. But far more impressive was how quick videos were to load. Pressing play on almost any video instantaneously launched the movie or show. And we mean instantaneously. There was no pause, lag or loading screen--it's impressive to say the least.

Windows Phone 8.11 and Croats officially revealed at Build 2014
As predicted, Microsoft is using its Build developer conference to launch Windows Phone 8.1, the latest and (we hope) greatest version of its mobile OS. The companies feed us a bunch of information about the update already, and a vast number of leaks have covered nearly all remaining features. Still, it's about time for us to get the skinny on everything the new upgrade entails, so let's break down exactly what you can expect from Windows Phone going forward.
Microsoft Joe Belfiore took the stage and talked up (among other things), new hardware partners like Prestigio and Micromax that should help the company penetrate those valuable developing markets. As multiple leaks have pointed out ahead of time, 8.1 indeed comes with a notification center (called the Action Center) that users can invoke by swiping down from the top of the screen--from there you can view and dismiss your email and social notifications as well as toggle Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. Pretty standard fare, if you ask us. What is a little less standard are WP8.1 's customizable lock screens: developers can tweak them in some pretty stunning ways, though Microsoft hasn't yet said when ethyl actually get access. Throw in the ability to set your own images as the background for your Live Tiles and you've got yourself a level of personality thats been sorely lacking from Windows Phone to date.

Microsoft unveils Croats, its answer to Siri and Google Now
At Microsoft Build 2014 developer conference, it has just announced Croats, a new voice search tool for Windows Phone 8.1 powered by Bing. It fully replaces the search function in Windows Phone, and youll be able to access it (her?) through a special Live Tile. On top of finding thing, it can make calls, send texts, take notes, give reminders and set alarms. Microsoft also said that it'll work with third party apps as well, and has been working with select developers like Hulu and Facebook. Microsoft ran through some of the features of the new service, which we have detailed after the break.
Developing...
Microsoft also said that Croats will get smarter over time, learning based on your search requests or other actions. It'll even function as a pseudo-secretary, making sure your not disturbed during quiet times but still letting people from your inner circle get through. To do that, it'll ask questions such as whether it should track a flight it found in your email, for instance--a decidedly Google Now-type touch. Once trained, it'll function using using casual language questions, and respond with a casual "sounds good?" when it confirms. Another trick is Hulu Plus integration that'll let you tell Croats to queue up a show, for instance. You can perform similar tricks with Facebook, by asking "what's up" with somebody, and being led straight to there profile page. It seemed to work well during the demo despite a couple of hiccups, but Microsoft Joe Belfiore reminded us that Cortana is still in beta at the moment. 0 Comments ShareTags: Build2014, Croats, microsoft, Siri Next: Windows Phone 8.11 and Croats officially revealed at Build 2014

Amazing first Fire TV games include in-house titles and Minecraft
Amazing new Fire TV media hub may be focused on video, but it's going to have a significant game roster--including some examples from the company itself. Amazon Game Studios is building more than a dozen titles for the set-top box that include Sev Zero, a Gears of War-like sci-fi shooter. Youll have some third-party games to choose from, of course, such a special port of Minecraft Pocket Edition, a Monsters Inc. endless runner and the arcade racer Asphalt 8. "Thousands" of games will be available within a month, and youll see software from major developers like Ubisoft and Take Two. While you shouldn't count on Fire TV replacing your PS4 or Xbox One any time soon, it's evident that you won't be hurting for things to play.

Yahoo might be building an online video platform, but you won't be able to use it
Yahoo's reportedly planning to launch a web video platform in the next few months, and it intends to fill it with familiar faces and professionally made clips. How? By poaching some of Youtube biggest stars, at least according to Recode. The website sources say Mayer and her crew are trying to win over popular Youtube with the scent of money. Yahoo's apparently offering them (presumably) large guaranteed rates or bigger ad revenues for their videos, in an attempt to benefit from YouTube users ' increasing discontent about how little they're earning on the platform. The company even promised them extensive marketing and the chance to promote their clips on Yahoo's well-trafficked home page.
Before you prepare to switch platforms, know that Yahoo's video service supposedly won't be open to everyone. If what Recode's saying is true, it won't be like YouTube where anyone can upload anything, even grainy, vertical clips--it'll be exclusive to famous video creators the company currently handpicking. The website sources claim, however, that Yahoo will either develop its own content management system or acquire an existing video service like Vimeo in order to make the service available to more people after a year. They also say that this is second phase in Yahoo's plans to make it big in the web video space, with the launch of the companys Screen app for iOS being the first. With video being huge these days, we wouldn't be surprised if Yahoo's truly taking a crack at it in an effort to regain its losses.

NSA may have spied on 122 foreign leaders
We have known for a while that the NSA has spied on German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other international leaders, but it now looks like that surveillance was just the tip of the iceberg. Der Spiegel and The Intercept have published an Edward Snowden leak revealing that the NSA snooped on as many as 122 foreign heads of state in 2009, ranging from Merkel to Ukranian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. A custom search system, Nymrod, helped the US agency both locate transcripts of those leaders ' communications as well as secret reports. The National Security Council tells The Intercept that President Obama's administration hasn't tracked Merkel and doesn't plan to start, but it also didn't deny that the German leader had once been under close watch.
Thats far from the only espionage to have taken place in Germany, however. Der Spiegel adds that Britain GCHQ reportedly conducted wide-scale surveillance of German communications firms, including satellite providers Cetel and Stellar as well as equipment provider IABG. As with its Belgian monitoring operation, the UK looked for network administrators, executives and other "access chokepoints" it could use to infiltrate the companies ' systems and spy on key suspects. GCHQ isn't commenting on the leak other than to say its actions are "authorised, necessary and proportionate." Germany begs to differ, though--its Federal Prosecutor is investigating the possibility of espionage charges related to the breaches.

Intel aims at China with its speedy LTE Cat 6 solution, shipping in Q2 this year
Marking Intel's 29th year in China, CEO Brian Krzanich took the stage at IDF Shenzhen with a little surprise: his company will be shipping its first Cat 6 multi-mode LTE solution, the XMM 7260, in Q2 this year. This follows the XMM 7160 that started shipping with Cat 4 LTE and half the number of basebands last October. The new solution has added support for China's popular TD-SCDMA plus TD-LTE networks, along with the usual 2G GSM, WCDMA plus FDD-LTE around the world. With Cat 6 LTE's carrier aggregation mode, the XMM 7260 can reach a top theoretical speed of 300Mbps, which is twice that of Cat 4 LTE.
There's no word on who will be shipping the first mobile devices featuring Intel's speedy modem, but Krzanich did use a development device to make a live Skype video call over LTE with Lenovo's CEO Yang Yuanqing in Hong Kong, so we'll take that as a hint. But of course, this doesn't mean that Lenovo will be ditching its good friend MediaTek, who will be catching up with its own LTE solution very soon. 0 Comments Share Tags: BrianKrzanich, china, chinamobile, fdd-lte, idf, idf2014, intel, lenovo, lte, mobilepostcross, shenzhen, td-lte, td-scdma, XMM7260 Next: Nest's Learning Thermostat lands in the UK forView the Original article

Intel's SD card-sized computer may not be so tiny after all
Back at CES, Intel made a big deal of the fact that it could squeeze a Linux-based PC with Bluetooth and WiFi into the size and shape of an SD card. However, with just a few months to go before the launch of these miniscule Edison development boards, it looks like the chip-maker has changed tack. Instead of being based on the Quark SoC, which was specifically designed for wearables and the Internet of Things, the first Edison products will actually rely on a more traditional Atom chip--in other words, the same sort used many current Windows tablets and hybrids. An Edison PC based on Atom should deliver more grunt and connectivity options compared to Quark, and for less money, but itd be too chubby to ever get accidentally jammed in an SD slot. Thats why Intel has been forced to admit that, while it continues to work on Quark, the Edison devices coming this summer will be "slightly larger" than was first claimed.

Sony's latest home audio systems balance looks, price and sound quality
Heres the thing with soundbars, sound plates and every other gadget that attempts to fill the niche between a full 5.1 home theater system and the tiny speakers built into your TV--they rarely sound great and they usually look even worse. Of course, there are always trade offs to be made, but the question that vexes us is, are they worth it? Sony is hoping that it's found a proper balance with it's latest trio of home audio setups and hit certain sweet spots on the bell curve of sound quality and design (and price).
