Big theater chains team up against Netflix's first movie

blogger-avatarbyRichard Lawler|@Rjcc| 6 hours ago

Unsurprisingly, there's one group that's not at all excited to hear Netflix and IMAX are arranging for the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel to hit theaters and streaming at the same time: movie theater owners. According to the LA Times, Regal, AMC, Carmike and Cinemark have all stated they don't plan to screen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend on their IMAX screens when it arrives next year, while Variety notes Canada's Cineplex and Europe's Cineworld are also staying away from the flick. The studios blocked a planned experiment to sell Tower Heist viewing for $60 a pop (honestly, they saved everyone there) back in 2011, but it seems doubtful they'll be able to intimidate Netflix into backing down.

Previous day-and-date home/theatrical releases, from Steven Soderbergh's Bubble in 2006 to recent flicks like Snowpiercer and Arbitrage, have usually been very limited. When Kickstarter-backed Veronica Mars debuted earlier this year, Warner Bros. had to buy every ticket in the theater in advance just to set up the screenings. IMAX seems content to screen the movie mostly in China, where Variety says it will have over 200 locations by the time this movie is out (and where Netflix does not yet offer service).

Amazon gives UK customers early e-book access with Kindle First

blogger-avatarbyJamie Rigg|@jmerigg| 5 hours ago

While Amazon tends to release new e-reader and tablet hardware in the UK and US simultaneously these days, we're still not top priority when it comes to new services. That being said, the UK has caught up significantly in the past week with the launch of the all-you-can-read Kindle Unlimited subscription and now, Kindle First. Amazon runs a bunch of publishing houses, and what Kindle First offers is early access to new releases originating from them. Each month, Amazon editors will select four books scheduled for publication the following month, and let you buy one (and only one) of them in e-book form for 99 pence, or snag one for free if you're a Prime member. Once you've registered, it's basically as simple as that. You can head to the Kindle First page now to check out the selections for this month, and sign up for the newsletter if you'd like to know when other titles become available for pre-release reading.

Oculus lets you tinker with the code and design of its first VR headset

byJon Fingas|@jonfingas|1 day ago

Oculus VR's DK1 headset

If you've ever wanted to modify a virtual reality headset (or even create one from scratch), Oculus VR just gave you a big head start on your project. The Facebook-owned firm has opened up the code, mechanical elements and design for its first VR wearable, the Oculus Rift DK1. Provided you have the know-how and tools, you can now build upon everything Oculus learned in its early days about screens, head tracking and ergonomics. The source material won't help you recreate the more advanced technology of newer Rift kits or the Gear VR, but it should be worth a look if you're curious about the inner workings of immersive displays.

Microsoft's first post-Nokia phone is the budget Lumia 530

BYMatt Brian @m4tt6 hours ago

With Nokia's range of Android-powered smartphones all but dead, Microsoft is pushing its newly-acquired Lumia line harder than ever. Today, it's introduced the lowest-priced Windows Phone to date, the Lumia 530, delivering middle-of-the-road specs for €85 ($114). For that, you'll get a 4-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) display, quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory (with support for 128GB microSD storage). There's also a 5-megapixel camera on the rear (no selfie camera here folks), which is controlled by Microsoft's latest Windows Phone 8.1 software. That, of course, offers access to Cortana (if you're in the US), the new WordFlow swipe keyboard and a multitude of other custom Microsoft- and Nokia-crafted apps. Like its older siblings, the Lumia 530 will also come in both single and dual SIM (3G) variants and offer interchangeable back covers, which will be available in the traditional orange, green, white and dark grey colors. Microsoft's latest Lumia will go on a global tour in the near future, starting with an initial rollout in "select markets" from next month.

Amazon put Prime in the viewer in first fire phone ad

BYMariella Moon @mariella_moon3 hours ago

0

These days, it's quite common to even nine-year-old children toting better smartphones than many adults out there--and that's probably the sentiment that Amazon hopes to bring with her first fire to see phone ad. Now that we're a stone's throw from the device Release date, the e-commerce giant secured the services of two precocious children for the commercial. It is mainly directed towards the phone tie-in with Amazon Prime instead of its functions (the more intriguing ones are 3D and head-tracking), but the company can be reserve for her second ad to come in July. If you want to view a few rank students persuade you to telephone the fire, head past the break to get to watch the ad.

'Oculus Connect' is the first virtual reality dev conference from Oculus VR

BYBen Gilbert @RealBenGilbert12 hours ago

0

First, Valve held its "Steam Dev Days" event back in January, and virtual reality's industry leaders spoke. Now, Oculus VR is organizing its own event -- "Oculus Connect 2014" -- and those same luminaries are speaking once more. Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey, president Brednan Iribe, and tech overlords John Carmack and Michael Abrash are all slated to speak, and the announce post promises attendees the first chance "to learn about upcoming Oculus technology." Perhaps what was teased to us back at E3 2014? We'll see!

Though the event is open to the public, you'll have to apply for a pass, and please beware that the event is detailed as "developer-centric." Should you either not get a pass or not be able to make it to Los Angeles, CA. on September 19/20, Oculus is livestreaming keynotes from the aforementioned speakers.

Interactive Björk album "Biophilia" is the first downloadable application in the permanent collection of the MoMA

On display at the Museum of modern art - bedroom "Rain", a sex toy with your mobile phone actress bedroom works an Academy Award-winning, have we seen many crazy things. You can now add "Tablet app" to this list. Bjork "Biophilia," an interactive album released on iOS and Android, has become the first downloadable application to the permanent collection of the MoMA. Finally, it was this interactivity, which have the app, a place in the collection. "With Biophilia, Björk is really innovative people like music, that experience, to take part in the performance and music and Visual effects, rather than just passively listening", MoMA says senior curator Paola Antonelli in a blog.

Note that this not the first application to join the collection of the MoMA; This is the first download-only. The first application was in fact the 'reactive book' - collection - disc embedded in physical books by John Maeda 1994 (Oh, the years 90) "apps are very"collector"due to its finished or half-finished could be linked to the live stream and on the Web, but their infrastructure design is stable and defined, unlike Web pages," Antonelli wrote. "As one of the objects of the collection of the own MoMA is the app the Museum seven days a week exposed to. Bjork's interactive 'Biophilia' album is the first downloadable app in MoMA's permanent collection

BYDana Wollman @danawollman20 hours ago

We've seen lots of crazy things on display at the Museum of Modern Art -- a "rain room," a sex toy that works with your phone, a sleeping Academy Award-winning actress. Now you can add "tablet app" to that list. Bjork's "Biophilia," an interactive album released on iOS and Android, has become the first downloadable app to join MoMA's permanent collection. First released in 2011 (and still available for sale), the album allows listeners to "contribute" to songs by playing with interactive on-screen visuals. In "Solstice," for instance (pictured above), the orbits actually allow you to control the string music, with the option to save and record your own version. Ultimately, it was that interactivity that earned the app a spot in the collection. "With Biophilia, Björk truly innovated the way people experience music by letting them participate in performing and making the music and visuals, rather than just listening passively," said MoMA senior curator Paola Antonelli in a blog post.

Of note, this isn't the first app to join MoMA's collection; it's just the first downloadable one. The first app was actually John Maeda's 1994 collection "Reactive Books" -- floppy disks tucked inside physical books. (Oh, the nineties.) "Apps are highly 'collectible' because of their finite or semi-finite nature-they might be connected to live feeds and to the Web, but their infrastructure design is stable and defined, unlike that of websites," Antonelli wrote. As one of MoMA's own collectibles, the app is on display at the museum seven days a week. That said, to spare you the $25 ticket price (and the trip to Manhattan), we'd suggest you just download it yourself for $12.99. 0 Comments

Nissan's ZEOD RC prototype racer completes first all-electric lap at Le Mans
