HTC teases action cam launch on October 8th (update: and it looks like this)

blogger-avatarbyJon Fingas|@jonfingas| 18 hours ago

Those claims that HTC is making an action camera just got much more concrete. The company has posted both a RECamera teaser site and a video (below) which not-so-subtly hint that the adventure-oriented shooter should launch on October 8th, the same day as HTC's "Double Exposure" media event. While there aren't many giveaways in the clip, it shows both a swimming pool dive and a wide-angle lens -- this is undoubtedly a waterproof device meant to take on the likes of GoPro. There's nothing here to confirm rumors that the camera will have a 16-megapixel sensor and wireless networking, but you'll only have to wait a couple of weeks to get the full scoop.

Update: And one enterprising Redditor's found pictures of the device -- which looks like... a... periscope? The image's source has now been taken down. Darn.

Microsoft pushes back the Xbox One's launch in China

byJon Fingas|@jonfingas|1 day ago

Xbox One

Bad news if you were hoping to pick up an Xbox One in Beijing next week: Microsoft has just delayed the game system's launch in China from September 23rd to sometime before the end of the year. The company isn't saying just what prompted the last-minute pushback, but it claims that it needs extra time to offer "first rate gaming and entertainment experiences" -- in short, something is still pretty rough around the edges. Whatever the reasons, Chinese gamers will have to wait a little while longer to get their first major console since the country lifted its years-long ban on fun-minded machines like this.

50 Cent's Star Wars-themed headphones launch on the light side of the 4th

That great disturbance you just felt? It's likely the bass from SMS Audio's Star Wars-themed headphones. We heard they were coming back in Vegas. In fact, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson joined us in person to tell us as much. Today, excuse us if we don't play along by saying the date, they'll be with you. Or rather, in stores, so you can buy 'em. You won't need 10,000 credits, but you will need to pay the 200 US dollars asking price upfront. No need to sell your landspeeder, either. However, you will need to pick your allegiances carefully, as there are Boba Fett, Stormtrooper, Empire and Rebel Alliance editions to choose from. The headphones themselves are emblazoned with logos on the earcups that match your chosen Star Wars representative/s, and on the Boba Fett one's at least, have a smart-looking matte finish, and soft leather-coated memory foam on the ears (complete with that "new trainer" smell). Inside the box are some Star Wars related goodies, and the box is drenched in intergalactic artwork. We're still disappointed there's no Leia design, but for the next edition, there's new hope.

Netflix could launch in France on a technicality

Netflix could soon arrive to the streaming-deprived netizens of France, but looks set to use a Luxembourg loophole to dodge stringent film industry laws, according to Les Echos. The US company has a similar arrangement in the UK and other parts of the EU, mainly for tax reasons. In France, however, broadcasters must also re-invest around a quarter of their revenues in French and European productions due to cultural protection laws. Netflix would be exempt from those rules in Luxembourg, and the French Culture Minister told Le Figaro that she couldn't block the company from operating in France that way. Still, with Netflix rumored to be coming there this fall, the film industry is already lobbying for foreign-based streaming companies to pay the same fees as local broadcasters. And as Google learned, regulators there don't tolerate any merde. 0 Comments Share
