Apple Watch has a smaller screen in tweaked video

blogger-avatarbySteve Dent|@stevetdent| 8 hours ago

Apple has released a new version of its Apple Watch design video, and a perceptive viewer noticed a slightly different design from the original. Most noticeable is a smaller sapphire screen and larger bezel on the Watch render, which appears to more closely match the prototype hardware we saw last month. None of this too surprising -- Apple had no doubt prepared the video using 3D renders before the final design was locked, and the changes are small enough that most folks won't care. Still, it does make us wonder if there may be more fine-tuning before production starts in January, especially given rumors of battery-life issues.

It's just this easy to steal from the Apple Store (video)

blogger-avatarbyRichard Lawler|@Rjcc| 12 hours ago

Late last week, ex-NBA player Rex Chapman was picked up by Scottsdale, Arizona police on felony charges of theft and trafficking in stolen property. According to the police, that's because Chapman made off from the local Apple Store with over $14,000 worth of gear over several visits occurring in the last few months. As you can see in the raw security video footage of some nine visits released by the police today, he would browse around, pick up an item (headphones, although from the video we can't tell if they're Beats), pretend to check it out with Apple's EasyPay app and put it in a white Apple sales bag. Finally, all he had to do was walk out before selling the goods at a pawnshop.

We've contacted Apple to find out if there are what specific policies are in place to stop this kind of thing from happening, but have not yet heard back. Apple employees reported the thefts back in August and recognized Chapman as a former player for the Phoenix Suns, and he was arrested Friday afternoon. He was released on $14,000 bond Saturday, and is due back in court Friday, but has been quiet on Twitter since the arrest.

Went ahead and downloaded the newest, freshest version of iOS for that new iPhone 6? Then immediately regret doing so? Apple's released a statement saying that users who have lost carrier service or Touch ID functionality should reinstall the initial version of iOS 8, until version 8.0.2 is ready to go. The company says this will take a few more days. We've got the full statement after the break.

"We have a workaround for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. Affected users can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes, for more information visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6487. We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users, and are working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it is ready in the next few days." Ex-NBAer Rex Chapman allegedly stole from Apple Stores by faking EasyPay

byRichard Lawler|@Rjcc|1 day ago

Lakers Suns 1998

Remember when Apple introduced its EasyPay self-checkout feature in 2011, and everyone wondered "how can they really tell if a customer is buying something or just shoplifting?" According to the Scottsdale, AZ police, former college and professional basketball player Rex Chapman had the same thought and acted on it. They arrested the 12-year NBA veteran at 1:45 PM local time, after employees recognized him as a former player for the Phoenix Suns and tied him to a string of thefts. Chapman is accused of committing seven instances of theft over a few months, snagging gear worth more than $14,000 and selling it at a local pawnshop for cash. All of this was allegedly done by picking up the items, pretending to use the self-checkout feature in the iPhone's Apple Store app and then just walking out. Now Chapman is facing nine counts of Organized Retail Theft and five counts of Trafficking in Stolen Property -- all of which are felonies -- and we're wondering if Tim Cook has another security issue that could use some attention.

Since his playing days ended in 2000, Chapman has worked as an NBA front office exec and basketball announcer. The timing of the arrest is interestingly close to the iPhone 6 launch, but there's no word on what Chapman is alleged to have stolen. Most of the pricier items in Apple's stores are either stored in back or not eligible for EasyPay, and we're thinking $14,000 covers a lot of cases or charging cables.

Apple will reportedly announce its next iPhone on September 9th

BYBrad Molen @phonewisdom5 hours ago

Apple Unveils New IPhones at Cheaper Price to Combat Rivals

Grab that box of sodium chloride, folks -- it's rumor time. Re/Code is reporting that Apple will hold its next iPhone event on September 9th. And while any publication can pull a date out of the hat and report on it, this particular entity has a good track record predicting Apple events (even when it was AllThingsD). This date places it just a few days after Samsung's upcoming product launch at the IFA trade show in Berlin; traditionally, this is where the Korean manufacturer announces its next Note flagship smartphone, so it's not too hard to see Apple taking on its arch rival with a similar-sized product. According to rumors, the company plans to introduce a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch version of its next iPhone. Still, nothing's set in stone, so we'll let you know as soon as we get official word from Cupertino.

Update: Both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal are also corroborating the September 9th report with their own sources.

Apple drops iPod touch prices, adds a dash of color and iSight camera to 16GB model

BYTerrence O'Brien @TerrenceOBrien4 hours ago

0

Apple has finally brought parity to its iPod touch line, which before treated the 16GB model as some sort of necessary, but unwanted, entry point for the family. It only came in one color, didn't have a camera and seemed a tad overpriced at $229. Today Cupertino finally rectified this long standing wrong. For one, the smallest model now clocks in at a reasonable $199. More importantly though, it finally comes in the same rainbow of hues and sports the same 5MP iSight camera as its bigger brothers. While clearly the 16GB version got the most love today, the 32GB and 64GB models have some news to report of their own. The middle child is now only $249, while the biggest of the three siblings is now only $299 -- that's $100 less than its original price. The new prices and colors are available in the Apple store now.
