Australia drops carbon tax in favor of paying to use to clean energy industries

Wind farm in Waterloo

For years, Australia has tried against polluters through a carbon tax that the cost of the most egregious offenders based on their greenhouse gas emissions. Prime Minister Tony Abbott does not believe that this strategy helps a lot, however, and just a Senate vote that completely scraps the tax has won. The nation will instead spend 2.55 billion AUD ($ 2.4 billion) on the Fund for the reduction of emissions, an attempt to curb pollution by paying to industries to both reduce their emissions, as well as the use of clean energy sources such as solar and wind farms. In theory, it is a win-win: the average Australian Home saves money ($ 550 AUD per year, Abbott's Government says), but companies still have an incentive to eco-friendly technology.

As you may suspect, it turns out on the road very divisive. Those in favor of dropping the tax note that pollution sensitive to companies, such as aluminum producers, were heavily sheltered from the cost--in some cases, they even made more profit. Even if the Fund is not an effective replacement, emissions would at least eliminate abuse by the switch-up.

Opponents, meanwhile, think this is a step backward for Clean Power. The climate Institute argues that companies now face only vague emissions limits, and that the Fund replacement can be stripped of in future budgets; even if the money is safe, there is no modeling that proves that it will help. Companies that already are heavily invested in green technology, and didn't have to pay the tax, will no doubt lose a large financial advantage. The withdrawal can't put more money in Australians bags, either--Fairfax Media notes that the figures used to that $ 550 figure not quite realistic, and the real savings possible light. It's hard to know what effect the withdrawal will have in the long term, but there is a chance it may pain alternative energy more than it helps.

Google drops Quickoffice now that its own apps can handle your work

BYJon Fingas @jonfingas5 hours ago

Quickoffice on iOS and Android

Google bought Quickoffice to boost the productivity of its Apps suite, and it clearly accomplished that mission when it released a slew of mobile editing tools that merge Quickoffice's file tech with Google Drive. Accordingly, the search firm is pulling the plug on the earlier software; it's going to remove Quickoffice from both Apple's App Store and Google Play "in the coming weeks." You can still download it after that if you're an existing fan, but newcomers will have no choice but to use either Google's apps or their rough equivalents.

The move isn't surprising, since there's no need for Google to keep a redundant app hanging around. However, it marks the end to a long, long chapter in cellphone history. Quickoffice was a mainstay of mobile workers before smartphones took off, and it has run on most major (and not-so-major) platforms over the span of roughly 12 years -- it's sad to see the name go, even if the technology will live on. 0 Comments

Apple drops iPod touch prices, adds a dash of color and iSight camera to 16GB model

BYTerrence O'Brien @TerrenceOBrien4 hours ago

Apple has finally brought parity to its iPod touch line, which before treated the 16GB model as some sort of necessary, but unwanted, entry point for the family. It only came in one color, didn't have a camera and seemed a tad overpriced at $229. Today Cupertino finally rectified this long standing wrong. For one, the smallest model now clocks in at a reasonable $199. More importantly though, it finally comes in the same rainbow of hues and sports the same 5MP iSight camera as its bigger brothers. While clearly the 16GB version got the most love today, the 32GB and 64GB models have some news to report of their own. The middle child is now only $249, while the biggest of the three siblings is now only $299 -- that's $100 less than its original price. The new prices and colors are available in the Apple store now.
