Went ahead and downloaded the newest, freshest version of iOS for that new iPhone 6? Then immediately regret doing so? Apple's released a statement saying that users who have lost carrier service or Touch ID functionality should reinstall the initial version of iOS 8, until version 8.0.2 is ready to go. The company says this will take a few more days. We've got the full statement after the break.

"We have a workaround for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users who lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. Affected users can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes, for more information visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT6487. We apologize for the great inconvenience experienced by users, and are working around the clock to prepare iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it is ready in the next few days." PlayStation Now's creator explains how game streaming came to Sony

byJon Fingas|@jonfingas|3 hours ago

PlayStation Now at CES 2014

With the PlayStation Now beta just opening to a larger chunk of the gaming population, you might be wondering how the streaming service came to Sony in the first place. Why did Gaikai drop its entire PC audience to join a console maker? Thankfully for you, Gaikai chief David Perry has just shed light on that transition in an interview with GameInformer. Simply put, streaming on computers was becoming a nightmare for Perry's team before the 2012 acquisition. The sheer number of compatibility problems was "massively reducing" the number of titles Gaikai could support, and the software required increasingly elaborate tricks (such as image recognition) just to run at all. The company wanted to escape these headaches by going to a platform with standardized elements like controllers and copy protection. When Sony came knocking, it quickly became clear that the PlayStation was a good match -- it solved many challenges in one fell swoop.

Perry is more than willing to talk about game streaming's present and future as well. He notes that the PlayStation Now test run has been going smoothly, and that it exists primarily to give his crew freedom to experiment with new techniques before Now is ready for primetime. It won't just be a matter of refinement in the future, though. Besides introducing social features like Share Play, Perry is hoping to expand device and game support; he has already promised streaming for older PlayStation releases. He'd ideally support "every game ever," so long as the technology allowed it. In the long run, he also sees the cloud enabling software that isn't possible when you're limited by the processing power of a box in your living room. "You could just completely let [developers] go wild and free," he says. That's not likely to happen soon, but it's good to know that streaming could improve the quality of the games you play, not just how you play them.

Facebook explains why it briefly toyed with users' emotions

BYJon Fingas @jonfingas13 hours ago

Facebook's company sign on 1 Hacker Way

Ever since word got out that Facebook had briefly manipulated some users' News Feeds to see how their feelings changed, a number of questions have popped up: just why did the company feel compelled to experiment in the first place? How noticeable was it? And was it worth the effort? As of today, we have some answers to those riddles. Study co-author Adam Kramer explains that Facebook was worried people would stop visiting the social network if they saw too many emotional updates -- a lot of negative posts could scare some people off, while a surge of positive vibes would leave others feeling left out. That's not what happened, however, and Kramer stresses that the company "never [meant] to upset anyone."

He also suggests that Facebook won't repeat history any time soon. The results of the circa-2012 field test may not have justified the "anxiety" that followed two years later, he says. Also, Facebook has been refining its "internal review practices" ever since, and it's taking the public's current response into account. Kramer doesn't say whether or not similar experiments will take place again, but it's clear that the company will be treading more carefully if it does. As it stands, there was only just enough of a change to suggest that the altered News Feeds had an effect.

While those are reassuring tidbits, they aren't going to satisfy everyone. There are calls for Facebook to meet scientific ethics standards when conducting research like this; critics argue that it should at least tell users they were part of an experiment, and ideally offer a chance to opt out ahead of time. Facebook assumed that it had permission because of a basic "research" clause in its Data Use Policy, but that's supposed to be used for product improvement, not academic papers. While the project did little if any harm, there's a worry that this lack of explicit consent could cause some real psychological damage should future tests get any more aggressive.
