iPad, I choose you: 'Pokémon' officially hits the App Store

blogger-avatarbyTimothy J. Seppala|@timseppala| 9 hours ago

Remember that Pokémon iPad game that was teased not too long ago? Well, if the mere mention of it stoked a fire inside that made you want to abandon Blizzard's Hearthstone forever, Joystiq has spotted that the pocket monster trading card game is available on the App Store now. Pokémon TCG Online is free to download, but there are a few catches. As the name suggests, it requires an internet connection to play and your Apple-branded slate needs to be of the Retina-display variety -- your first- and second-gen iPads won't cut the mustard, according to iTunes. If you're already heavily invested in the game on OSX and Windows, Time points out that progress you've made in the last three years transfers over to the mobile version as well. Handy! And just like that, a Nintendo property is appearing somewhere other than on one of its own devices. Somewhere, an investor is probably smiling.

It's just this easy to steal from the Apple Store (video)

blogger-avatarbyRichard Lawler|@Rjcc| 12 hours ago

Late last week, ex-NBA player Rex Chapman was picked up by Scottsdale, Arizona police on felony charges of theft and trafficking in stolen property. According to the police, that's because Chapman made off from the local Apple Store with over $14,000 worth of gear over several visits occurring in the last few months. As you can see in the raw security video footage of some nine visits released by the police today, he would browse around, pick up an item (headphones, although from the video we can't tell if they're Beats), pretend to check it out with Apple's EasyPay app and put it in a white Apple sales bag. Finally, all he had to do was walk out before selling the goods at a pawnshop.

We've contacted Apple to find out if there are what specific policies are in place to stop this kind of thing from happening, but have not yet heard back. Apple employees reported the thefts back in August and recognized Chapman as a former player for the Phoenix Suns, and he was arrested Friday afternoon. He was released on $14,000 bond Saturday, and is due back in court Friday, but has been quiet on Twitter since the arrest.

Oculus wants a VR app store for every device you can think of

byTimothy J. Seppala|@timseppala|1 day ago

When we saw the Samsung Gear VR at IFA, Oculus CTO John Carmack showed us a basic version of an app store made for mobile virtual reality. But when the headset ships to consumers sometime later this year, the VR outfit has bigger plans. It's rebranding the current Oculus Share "store" into Oculus Platform and turning it into a launcher of sorts for apps and other experiences, as noticed by TechCrunch. Platform will act as common store across the firm's entire platform including the Rift and mobile. Like the prototype from earlier this month, the store will exist within virtual reality and will house games, apps and stuff like the virtual movie theater, Oculus Cinema.

Gallery | 5 PhotosSamsung Gear VR software + See all 5

The plan is eventually to have it available on just about any platform you can think of: Android, Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, iOS, Safari and Windows Phone. In case you were wondering just how seriously Oculus and Samsung (OcuSam? SamUlus?) were about this whole thing, that list should help erase any doubts. What's more, when Oculus releases its own apps to Platform it'll release them as open source as well. Want the Oculus-branded movie theater to look more like your local multiplex? You'll be able to fix that.

Google's new, image-rich Play Store for Android is rolling out now

BYJon Fingas @jonfingas12 hours ago

Google Play Store with a Material Design flair

It looks like you won't have to wait long at all to check out Google's visually rich Play Store revamp -- it's rolling out now. The refresh doesn't appear any different on the surface, but a quick dive shows very different product pages that are clearly inspired by the company's multi-layered Material Design philosophy. Cover art plays a much larger role, and details like rating overviews and genres have been moved into easy-to-read icons. You might not like everything about the new storefront -- there's considerably more scrolling involved, for one thing. On the whole, though, it's both prettier and easier to understand at a glance. The revamp should reach your device within days, but Android Police has an installer if you just can't wait to see what's new.

Our latest update is rolling out right now! We're excited to share a sneak peek of what you'll get in the coming days pic.twitter.com/k5BidxR4Vu

Windows Store now helps you find apps faster, even if they're for your phone

Although Windows 8.1's store has a healthy stock of apps, actually finding those apps has been a pain at times. Much of the store's interface has been hidden, and it hasn't always been clear where to go if you're just getting started. Starting today, it's considerably easier to get around: Microsoft is pushing out a Windows Store update that puts more content front and center. The navigation bar is now a permanent fixture on the screen, and points you to popular areas like the categories and top app charts. You'll also see themed collections (such as music apps) and multiple featured selections right on the first store page.

The improved shop takes better advantage of Windows' increasing cross-platform app support, too. Developers can link their desktop software to its Windows Phone equivalent, making it clear that you'll get both titles -- handy if you didn't realize that there was a pocket-sized version of a hot new release. The store tweaks are rolling out gradually to Windows users, so don't be dismayed if you don't see the new portal right away. However, the wait might be worth it if it helps you discover a hidden gem or two. 0 Comments Share

Sony's online store will be the only place to buy its best phone in the US

Sony's Xperia Z2 may be a big, powerful slab of a phone, but fans in the United States hoping to snag one in-person or with a contract are out of luck... for now, at least. The company just confirmed that neither it nor its tiny cousin the Z1 Compact will make their way to US store shelves "in the near future." The news comes as sort of bummer considering that Sony's Z2 has received pretty consistent acclaim so far, but hey -- at least Sony isn't completely full of bad news. An unlocked version of the Z2 will be available in the company's online store come the summer, though anyone hoping to nab one a pint-sized Z1 (which is no slouch either) will have to ferret out some alternate sources. At least Xperia fans in need of a fix have at least one option: the Xperia Z2 tablet will be available here soon, and it's easily one of the best 10.1 Android tabs coming to market.
