Xbox Live and PlayStation Network are both having issues (update: fixed!)

Excited to play the Destiny on PlayStation Network? You're not the only one, and demand as the game's beta opened its doors today seems to have the service stumbling. A message on the PlayStation Knowledge Center says PSN access is "Intermittently available" so if it's working, great but don't be surprised if you notice some odd behavior. Xbox fans shouldn't be too quick to point fingers though, since besides waiting another week to try out an early version of Bungie's next big game you may also experience issues with Xbox Live. The Xbox Live Dashboard points out problems for some users signing in or accessing the Video and Music services, but says there is a team working on it and promises another updated within the half hour. Since Nintendo Network appears to be running just fine, we can only assume which culprit is behind this.

Update: The PlayStation Network status has been upgraded to "online" so go forth and beta test freely. Meanwhile, Xbox Support says its sign-in issues are resolved, so you should be good to go there as well.

PlayStation 4 still best-selling console, six months running

It looks like Sony still has bragging rights that the PlayStation 4 is the top-selling console. Not to be outdone by the latest NPD report, the PlayStation Twitter account announced that the Sony's new console is still outselling the Xbox One, for the sixth month in a row. Yesterday, Microsoft said that following the Xbox One's $100 price drop it'd seen a "strong spike in interest" and sales of the console jumped by "more than double" the previous month. It's worth noting however, that Redmond didn't release specific sales numbers for May and, to be fair, neither did Sony. The latest report from the NPD Group plays it a bit vague, too, but says that combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were higher than combined totals for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. What's more, compared to last June, hardware sales saw a 106 percent increase overall. Sales of home consoles combined represented a 200 percent jump compared to last year, which is likely due to the two new consoles being available.

In terms of software, the reason most people buy new consoles in the first place, six of the same games from last month's top ten remain the same. including Mario Kart 8, Wolfenstein: The New Order and Watch Dogs. However, overall software sales for June dipped some 67 percent compared to last year, which the NPD group attributes to last June's launches of The Last of Us on PS3, Animal Crossing: New Leaf on Nintendo's 3DS handheld and the disc-based version of Minecraft for the Xbox 360. It seems like the summer drought is a bit drier this year than last, but hey, at least we've got the Destiny beta now, right?

Update: Nintendo has just released its June numbers, and says that Wii U hardware sales have seen an increase of 48 percent compared to June 2013. Software has made a dramatic leap compared to last year as well, with the console's games seeing a 129 percent boost in sales. Nintendo has even gone as far as saying that Mario Kart 8 is the month's top-selling game, period, and that it's moved some 470,000 copies in June alone, with a lifetime total of over 885,000 units. That's an awful lot of blue shells. The 3DS platform is doing well too, with 55 percent more hardware sold compared to May. Life on the island is also good, with Nintendo's bizarre life-simulator Tomodachi Life pushing over 175,000 digital and physical copies since its June 6th launch.

Google confirms Android Wear will support custom watch faces

Since its beginnings, the Android platform has been known for being heavily customizable. As such, it's not exactly a surprise to hear Google say its new smartwatch ecosystem, Android Wear, is due to support watch faces from third-party developers. However, having actual confirmation makes for perfect peace of mind. In a Google+ post, Wear's Senior Developer Advocate, Wayne Piekarski, affirmed this would be the case, stating that the team is already working on a custom watch face API. "Customization has helped Android thrive, and the same will be true for Android Wear," he wrote. The incoming API will make it "as simple as possible" for devs to make all-around great watch faces, ones which can look good, not drain a battery and blend well with the watches card-based UI. Piekarski said "some" of these things won't be available until later this year, but that they are, without a doubt, on their way. So, don't worry, soon enough you'll have better (and official) choices to deck out that smart tick-tock wearable of yours.

Google loves Epic Rap Battles and the ad money it brings in

Google Co-Founder Larry Page Takes Over AS CEO From Eric Schmidt

To no one's surprise, Google -- the company that builds everything from web email services to self-driving cars -- has once again climbed the revenue charts. Today in its quarterly earnings report, the Mountain View company reported it's raked in $15.96 billion in revenue this quarter, which is about a 22 percent growth year-over-year. And, as you might expect with Google, a bulk of that cash comes from good ol' advertising -- about 90 percent, in fact. But the chatter wasn't all about search and advertising in today's earnings call -- the company also alluded to other notable successes such as Google Shopping Express, Chromebooks and, yes, Epic Rap Battles of History.

Even though Google didn't break out the exact percentage from which it gains that aforementioned ad revenue, it's clear the company is focused more than ever on leveraging the advertising dollars it gets not just from search, but also via other services such as YouTube and Google Play. Indeed, Nikesh Arora, the current Chief Business Officer for Google -- who, incidentally, has announced he'll be leaving the company for SoftBank -- spent quite a bit of time in the call talking video.

"Video is at the forefront of our efforts," he said. Notably, he called out the professionally created content on YouTube, pointing out channels like Epic Rap Battles of History and internet celebs like Michelle Phan that add value to the streaming service. Digital sales on Google Play continue to do well too, and he credits partnership deals with providers like CBS and Viacom as part of its success. As for whether Google was open to making money not just from advertising but from subscriptions too, CFO Patrick Pichette said they're still experimenting with different ends of the spectrum, but it's fair to say they "have a horse in every one of these races."

"We're living in a multiscreen world," continued Pichette, stating that the fact that video can be viewed not just on your tablet, but also on your TV via Chromecast, makes the revenue possibilities very intriguing. This is ostensibly the reason why the company didn't break out mobile revenue from desktop -- as it all sort of flows together -- but it could also point to the fact that it's not doing as well in the mobile ad biz.

Stepping away from advertising, Arora also drew attention to the considerable success of Google Shopping Express, saying he didn't know anyone who didn't like it. "It has tremendous results," he said, stating that it's "clearly an opportunity for us." The focus for the delivery service will remain local, even as they cater to large businesses as well as small ones. "There continues to be amazing demand for the product." Not to leave Chrome out, Arora said that over a million Chromebooks have been sold to schools and that the Chromecast's popularity continues to grow.

As for those moonshot projects like self-driving cars? Well, the company said that it'll still invest in them and will keep a close eye as to how that money is allocated, but it'll certainly take a long time for any of those to turn a profit. In the meantime, we'll cross our fingers for an epic rap battle starring Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

Amazon put Prime in the viewer in first fire phone ad

These days, it's quite common to even nine-year-old children toting better smartphones than many adults out there--and that's probably the sentiment that Amazon hopes to bring with her first fire to see phone ad. Now that we're a stone's throw from the device Release date, the e-commerce giant secured the services of two precocious children for the commercial. It is mainly directed towards the phone tie-in with Amazon Prime instead of its functions (the more intriguing ones are 3D and head-tracking), but the company can be reserve for her second ad to come in July. If you want to view a few rank students persuade you to telephone the fire, head past the break to get to watch the ad.

Will Canada's only Netflix subscription TV service with first-run Disney movies

Canada often gets stiffed when it comes to premium streaming video, but it's go time for a big breakthrough. Just like in the US (after 2016 when the deal kicks in), Netflix has landed a multi-year Canadian deal that will make it the only subscription service for TV first-run Walt Disney Studios movies in the country offers. Disney-backed titles released from 2015 will further hit Netflix Canada eight months after they have left theaters, faster than they usually have reached conventional pay TV. While the agreement still not Canucks all the Netflix content that enjoy their American neighbors give, it will let them stream the latest Marvel or Pixar blockbuster without shoot for a rental or The Movie Network.

Uber unleashes ice on-call service are 144 cities worldwide for a day

For a few years now, Uber of delivering ice for one day on request to anyone who calls his ice cream truck through its apps. Well, this time-a-year event is back, and now reaching more people around the world, even in places where the Uber services are not usually available. This 18 July, Uber have ice cream trucks go around 144 cities in 38 countries (last year's event included only 33 cities), serves a variety of delicacies such as gelato on sticks, sundaes and froyo. The ride-share service in Manila, Philippines, even the chance to do some charity work by donating the truck proceeds to the victims of Typhoon Glenda. Since each region will offer its own frozen goodies at different prices, it is best to check the Uber blog to know what time you can call the ice cream truck and how much it will eat your per budget.

Facebook's buy button you can buy products directly from page headings and ads

Facebook does not want you to ever leave Facebook-not looking at photos, read the news or chat with friends--and now you don't even have to leave to buy a product. The social giant new buy button (and associated e-commerce infrastructure) allows you to purchase directly on the site. Once you click the button, which is currently being tested with select small business partners in the us, a pop-up window will prompt you to confirm payment and shipping info, then complete the purchase, without Facebook. The tool is available only on select merchants pages for the time being, including change of watches seen in the example above, although it could roll-out to more companies if this process has been deemed a success.

Australia drops carbon tax in favor of paying to use to clean energy industries

For years, Australia has tried against polluters through a carbon tax that the cost of the most egregious offenders based on their greenhouse gas emissions. Prime Minister Tony Abbott does not believe that this strategy helps a lot, however, and just a Senate vote that completely scraps the tax has won. The nation will instead spend 2.55 billion AUD ($ 2.4 billion) on the Fund for the reduction of emissions, an attempt to curb pollution by paying to industries to both reduce their emissions, as well as the use of clean energy sources such as solar and wind farms. In theory, it is a win-win: the average Australian Home saves money ($ 550 AUD per year, Abbott's Government says), but companies still have an incentive to eco-friendly technology.

As you may suspect, it turns out on the road very divisive. Those in favor of dropping the tax note that pollution sensitive to companies, such as aluminum producers, were heavily sheltered from the cost--in some cases, they even made more profit. Even if the Fund is not an effective replacement, emissions would at least eliminate abuse by the switch-up.

Opponents, meanwhile, think this is a step backward for Clean Power. The climate Institute argues that companies now face only vague emissions limits, and that the Fund replacement can be stripped of in future budgets; even if the money is safe, there is no modeling that proves that it will help. Companies that already are heavily invested in green technology, and didn't have to pay the tax, will no doubt lose a large financial advantage. The withdrawal can't put more money in Australians bags, either--Fairfax Media notes that the figures used to that $ 550 figure not quite realistic, and the real savings possible light. It's hard to know what effect the withdrawal will have in the long term, but there is a chance it may pain alternative energy more than it helps.

Retired NASA probe brought back to life after 27 years drifting in space

The last time ISEE-3 fired its engines, Madonna was moving up the charts, the stock market was booming and President Reagan was busily denying that he'd secretly sold weapons to Iran. After that final gasp from its thrusters, in February 1987, the International Sun-Earth Explorer probe would have drifted into permanent retirement -- if a $150,000 crowdfunded project hadn't come along to save it at the last minute. That project has just scored it first big success, by remotely reawakening the 36-year-old craft's engines and altering its course in order to make it easier to communicate with. Keith Cowing, who's co-leading the private group in charge of the resurrection, blogged that it was "all in all, a very good day." If the next steps go equally well, the idea is to reconfigure ISEE-3's onboard computers and sensors so that they can be used for a bit of citizen science during remaining two-month, four million-mile journey back to earth.

Vertu launches 'Bentley' collection of luxury smartphones

What happens when two British luxury brands make a baby? In the case of phone maker Vertu and automaker Bentley, the pair have just announced that they are working on "Vertu for Bentley" phones -- with the first one due in October, followed by four more models over the course of the five-year exclusive partnership (sorry, no more love for Ferrari). There's little info on what to expect here at the moment; all we know is that these special edition devices -- presumably running on Android with nice specs à la Signature Touch -- will offer exclusive Bentley content to their users, and that they "will be jointly designed by the Vertu and Bentley design teams, based on a relationship that goes far deeper than the utilisation of materials and cues on design." Jeez, get a room, you two.

Vodafone's WorldTraveller makes roaming cheaper in eight expensive countries

Vodafone's decided to do away with itemised roaming charges in eight far-away countries, today announcing that customers will be able to use their existing voice, text and data allowances in the USA, India, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Ghana, Qatar and South Africa for £5 per day. This WorldTraveller add-on complements Vodafone's existing EuroTraveller offering, which covers allowances in numerous European countries for £2 per day (£3 after August 31st). However, both bundles fall noticeably short of Three's Feel at Home service, which offers free roaming in 16 countries, although Vodafone does cast a wider net than its rival. To opt-in, pay monthly customers can dial 5555 when they touchdown in any supported country, and they'll only be charged for days they use the phone.

Netflix is looking to pay someone to watch Netflix all day

Ploughing through your new favourite series on Netflix is something you probably enjoy doing after a working day, but what if it was your working day? You see, Netflix has a fancy recommendation engine that suggests movies and shows you might like based on your prior viewing habits. To do that successfully, it needs information from a special group of humans that goes beyond the basics like genre and user rating. "Taggers," as they're known, analyse Netflix content and feed the recommendation engine with more specific descriptors if, for example, a film is set in space or a cult classic. In short, these people get paid to watch TV all day, and Netflix is currently hiring a new tagger in the UK. There's obviously a little more to the job than binge-watching House of Cards, but will perks like working from home, flexible hours and a free Netflix subscription, you'd be mad not to throw your hat into the ring.
