Where to buy Nokia's Lumia 930

Nokia's latest flagship Windows Phone, and its last as a company unbeholden to Microsoft, launched in the UK today. The Lumia 930, also known as the Lumia Icon over in the states, marries high-end specs with the newest version of Microsoft's mobile OS, Windows Phone 8.1. Unfortunately, one of the major new features of the update -- the addition of virtual assistant Cortana -- isn't available in the UK yet (officially, anyway). At least Brits get a free wireless charger with every Lumia 930 purchase in recompense, and if you're looking to spring for one right now, you also stand to receive an introductory accessory bundle including portable wireless charger, Bluetooth speaker and £20 app voucher (or £40 from Vodafone). This bonus is only available from major carriers and retailers before the end of July, or until stocks last, mind. Incentives are great and all, but before that, you still need to decide which of the many Lumia 930 merchants you want to do business with.

We don't have anything but the lowest contract price without an upfront charge for Vodafone right now, either.

Further to the major retailers/contract resellers, various online outlets like buymobiles.net, affordablemobiles.co.uk, and mobiles.co.uk also have hotchpotch of different carrier tariffs on offer.

The only MVNO ranging the 930 right now is Tesco Mobile, for free on contracts from £29.50 per month, although giffgaff does list the phone as "coming soon." Then you're only left with the option of buying an unlocked model, but make sure to avoid Microsoft's own store, which is asking £550 for the handset. That's £100 more than e-tailers like Expansys and Unlocked Mobiles, not to mention Clove only wants £435 and one little-known vendor will sell you a Lumia 930 for just £426.

Where to buy the LG G3

The G3 is LG's latest flagship, and as far as we're concerned, the best handset the Korean company has ever made. It also officially launches for the UK market today. Despite the G3 having top-of-the-range hardware including a frankly insane 5.5-inch Quad HD display (2,560 x 1,440), LG hasn't yet managed to build a mobile brand that's as popular as some of the big players. As such, carriers and retailers aren't all as keen on the G3 as they are on, say, the perpetually advertised Galaxy S5. There are still plenty of ways to get your hands on one, however, whether you're looking for a new contract, pay-as-you-go device or an unlocked model.

As you can see, it's only really half of major UK carriers and retailers that've decided to stock the G3, although Vodafone did say it was interested at one point -- lesser-known online retailer buymobiles.net also gets an honourable mention for its £33 per month contract option on EE's network, which demands no upfront payment. In terms of MVNOs, only giffgaff has the G3 on offer for just under £20 per month with a £50 one-off payment, or for £479 on pay-as-you-go. The usual suspects Clove and Unlocked Mobiles (as well as Carphone Warehouse, of course) have SIM-free models in stock (Clove's also bundling every handset with a free wireless charger), but the cheapest place to get an unlocked unit is Currys, of all places, where they're going for £479. That's cheaper than the least expensive pay-as-you-go deal, so make sure you don't go buying a carrier-locked model when you can actually save money opting for a SIM-free device.

Japan: the country where flip-phones refuse to die

The buttons are easier to type on, the battery lasts longer, it's familiar. No, we're not talking about BlackBerry this time, but the Japanese feature phone. Glorious, folding forefather to the smartphone, and the form-factor that gave birth to gara-kei, a shorthand phrase for "Galapagos phones". It's a negative term pointing to devices that simply wouldn't survive outside of Japan. However, it's not stopped the country's biggest carrier, NTT Docomo, from revealing two new feature phone models (and a refreshed paint job for an older phone) just last week. Our Engadget Japanese colleagues were told by Docomo's spokesman that these phones are still so popular with some customers that they practically sell themselves -- many still enter their stores looking for a new flip-phone, not a smartphone.

While developing countries continue to buy up feature phones, where prices continue to plummet, Japan's feature phones remain resistant to the smartphone substitution seen in western countries. Docomo has also started offering an unlimited voice call service -- a feature that's arguably more comfortable on longer-shaped feature phones and another reason for the carrier to continually refresh its gara-kei lineup.

Fujitsu's latest model, the F-07F, has a 13-megapixel camera, 1,000mAh battery and a 3.3-inch color display: specs that make it a high-end feature phone, but (camera aside) pale in comparison to cheap, entry-level smartphones like the Moto E. Here's one more surprising point: feature phones might cost less to make, but due to carriers subsidies for smartphones (in a bid to keep its customers upgrading), feature phones often cost more per month than mainstay Android devices from the likes of Samsung and Sony. There may have been a few smartphones in flip-phone clothing, but Japan's gara-kei aren't going anywhere soon.
