AMC adds recliners to its theaters in hopes that you'll ditch Netflix for a night

If you've given up on your local movie theater due to its lack of comfort and not the ever-increasing expense, AMC has a plan to lure you back. The second-largest movie chain in the US is shelling out $600 million to rip out old seating and replace it with recliners. That's right, pretty soon you'll be able to settle into a La-Z-Boy-esque seat for the latest three-hour installment of The Hobbit. The outfit has already converted some locations, seeing an average attendance increase of 80 percent. Major markets tend to have the most frequented theaters, so the project aims to revamp those venues that struggle, with a second stage of the face-lift going to big cities. Unfortunately, those recliners won't lean back as far, cutting down on the number of seats lost to the larger chairs. And as you might expect, a ticket price hike is said to be on the way after the renovations have been in place for a year.

Facebook paper is a trend section added, hopes that you will see the

Remember paper? That app for reading stuff from Facebook. It sure is beautiful, but definitely has some issues in the Department of functionality. Well, last month it added some seemingly essential features of version 1.1, such as notifications about event and birthday were missing. Today, to celebrate version 1.2, Facebook is adding support for hashtags, a trend posts section and photo tagging. Paper is still not anywhere near ready to replace the standard Facebook app, but now that you have your profile or cover photo editing, you can rely on it for something more. (Maybe even tens of minutes!) There's even Autocomplete for friends names when you're trying to get them in post tag. In fact, paper comes in the awkward teenage phase. We see the promise and the job--there's glimmers of maturity under her clumsy veneer. Perhaps most impressive is the fine Grain controls that have been added for the edit and share updates. Switch between audience and friends is just a tap away, even if you have previously placed a missive on your wall. Between home and paper it is easy to see how an image for Facebook users interact with the service in the future ... not that future here yet.

Target improves online subscriptions, hopes you'll drop Amazon for monthly shipments

Despite some major (and very public) security setbacks these past few months, Target's been hard at work positioning itself as a viable Amazon competitor. In September, the retailer introduced an online subscriptions pilot as an answer to Amazon's "Subscribe and Save" service, offering 200 or so items available for shipping in installments of four to 12 weeks. Now, Target's improving two of the major weaknesses of that program, increasing the number of products eligible for subscriptions to 1,500 and adding in the incentive of discounts.

Unlike Amazon's program, Target's subscription service didn't originally offer extra savings to customers signing up for product subscriptions -- though it has always offered free shipping and a 5 percent discount to those paying with a Target card. Now, you'll get a 5 percent discount on all subscription orders, and certain products will carry additional price cuts on a promotional basis. Amazon, it's worth noting, offers up to a 15 percent discount when you order five or more subscriptions per month. Still, especially for customers with a store debit or credit card, Target's offering is starting to look pretty appealing. 0 Comments Share
